When is denard suppose to give his speech?

Michigan State Quarterback Kirk Cousins delivers the speech to represent the players at the 2011 Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon.

  • He was nervous and out of his element. He gave props to cousins twice. I couldn't understand much else. It's tough doing that.

  • I haven't even watched it yet. But fuck anyone making fun of this kid for his speech. He's goddamned 21 years old and seems like a nice kid, despite where he chose to go to school. He's not a hateful, arrogant little piece of shit like Mike Hart. I understand hating him on the football field because he's a rival but let's be better than the officially-unaffiliated folks doing bar crawls in Taylor, please.

Kirk Cousins is a transcendent kid. His calling may go beyond being a professional football player. I've been presenting shit to clients for 15 years and I don't have 1/10th of the poise that he does. I am very glad that we have a kid like Kirk in our corner but to expect Denard or any other student athlete to measure up is foolish.

Correct, Cousin's speech was fantastic. Heck, I told all the kids I coach to go home and watch it...which was hard to do as a Michigan fan.

Still, I'm proud to have Denard up representing the B1G players and UM. Especially when we see idiots out there like Fitz Toussaint thinking he's above the law and everyone else, it's nice to see there's a lot of high character guys out there too.

Even if Denard can't speak nearly as well as Cousins, he's just as classy of a person, and I think his speech conveyed that.

How does him talking about his hardships make him just as classy of a person? Suck Denard's schlong all you want, he isn't half the representative/player that Kirk was in the B1G.

Classy enough to admit his own team was dominated and as a result lost a game or so classy that he says the reason they lost is because they didn't play "Michigan football" or "come to play that day?"

Jesus Christ, what the hell do you care what he says? Does the score change because Shoelace didn't admit MSU took him and his teammates to the woodshed? Will his comments have any effect on this season's game?

I'm no Bobby Sak, but some of you people need to chill out with the Michigan stuff.

It was much better than the overated speech Kirk Cousins made last year when he had to wear an electronic tether given his role as the kingpin of the Rather Hall massacre.

I will bet you that there were plenty of chUMps who despised Kirk Cousins. Kirk Cousins? How can you hate Cousins? He always was respectful to opponents and conducted himself with a lot of class on and off the field. While I never go on the Fort, I guarantee a lot vitriol has been spewed out on the Fort about Kirk in the past 4 years.

It's just the way it is with rivals. Reciprocation of "respect" is never returned by any chUMps for anything regarding MSU--which is fine. We don't need it from them. Never have. But because of this, I can only bring myself to tolerate DR--which is the opposite to how I felt about Mike Hart. So that is something.

I'll bet more Spartans on this board have written or said that DR is a good, classy kid more than any chUMps on the Fort wrote/said about about KC. So the Spartan fans don't need a sanctimonious lecture from someone who is not a Spartan. We are better fans and more respectful of our opponents than our friends down the road. This has been proven over and over again.

  • I'm sure everyone told shoelace what a great job he did there.

Reality was, he talked about himself the whole time, was hard to understand, and clearing your throat over a microphone is not a good idea. His-words-often-came-out-in-short bursts... followed by.... a ... short... pause... Ahem, (clears his throat)...

    Just calling what I see.

  • The sanctimonious types need to STFU. Denard got up to the podium to do something that was CLEARLY outside of his comfort zone. He shouldn't be trashed for that, but don't expect me to lick his nuts either. I'm sure there are dozens of kids that could have delivered a better message, and done so more eloquently, but they aren't the "star" that Denard is, and wouldn't bring in the ratings that the BTN wants. At the end of the day what you've got is a genuinely good kid who can barely speak intelligibly but can run really fast. It is what it is.

For the record, I don't blame Denard. You get what you pay for in life, and since he's not paying a dime of tuition to the "Harvard of the Midwest," I guess it's appropriate their English professors haven't bothered to teach him anything.

    Good speech. Very personal, thoughtful.

Struggled at times like most of us as a newbie to such a high leverage speech. Lower quality audio didn't help on that front.

    A better copy will emerge.

youtube comments are glowing examples of the Walverine Nation...Denard's speech is just as great because he comes from the hood and has overcome so much! He exemplifies Michigan's dedication to diversity! lol

    --------------

Cousins is a preppy, everything handed to him on a silver platter, kind of guy. Yes, I will concede that he is more articulate than Denard. I will even concede that he is more educated. However, his speech was as disingenuous as they come. Denard Robinson's speech came from the heart and he chooses to live by those words on a daily basis. It's unfortunate Kirk can't say the same.

    --------------

I just want to point out that after Kirk Cousin's finished his speech, Brady Hoke stood up, turned around to face Cousins after he sat back down in his chair, looked directly into his eyes, and applauded him. He didn't do it because he approves of Kirk Cousins as a person or as a player, although he very well might. He did it because he emphatically approves of the content of his speech.
Note Mark Dantonio's reaction to Denard's speech. Somebody should inform Dantonio that character matters.

    --------------

Great speech! I absolutely admired the Lil Wayne reference as it was not only inspirational but empowering as well.It gives people like me the courage to represent where I come from with conviction and see it be accepted in higher society.

    --------------

Denard represents the challenges familiar within urban society and refreshingly shows the diversity of culture at UM as well. Although I can identify more with Shoelace speech, both Kirk Cousins and Denard Robinson should be proud of the way they have represented their universities, the B1G and their peers as both speeches are equally as powerful and should be respected in that manner. Go Blue

    --------------

Dantonio is a dickweed. Wait to see his expression after his boys get whacked by Robinson and his teammates in October.

If the "sanctimonious types" you're referring to are those who criticized his speech, then count me in. I call it like I see it. I'll be the first to praise Shoelace's playmaking skills. The dude is an athlete.

But that was a poor speech. There were times where he repeated, times where he repeated himself. Cleared his throat - LOUDLY. He talked about himself, then fluffed up UM, then talked about himself. At times I couldn't understand him. It's called "enunciation".

By all accounts, Denard is a pretty good guy - but his speech skills stink. And frankly, if you're gonna fluff UM as this awesome institution, it's best delivered in an articulate manner. You lose credibility.

  • Damn, some of you guys are insecure. The kid made a fine speech, and most of you would struggle just as much as he did in front of such a large audience. Cousins' speech was better, but calling him names like "Datard" is just pathetic and below us as MSU fans.

  • Denard's message was a good one, but the delivery was not. While I think Denard should get some credit for going up there and doing something outside of his comfort zone the B1G should have found someone who IS more comfortable in a public speaking situation. These Walvies trying to justify that Denards speech is better because Kirk was born with a sliver spoon and Denard grew up with some serious adversities is completely ridiculous. I highly doubt Denards speech will get 300K views and have the Tirico's and Musberger's of the world suggest people view his speech on national broadcasts.

Just saw Denard's speech. I don't doubt at all that that his story is a good one to tell. However, considering he was supposed to be speaking on behalf of all the players, I thought he should have focused less on himself and his story and more on what the players in general, on what they should be doing, etc. Maybe I'm a little biased towards Kirk's speech from last year, but it seems Denard's speech was a little too focused on himself.

But the point is that his story isn't his story alone. It's the story of a lot of guys playing big league football across the country. They come from places where it's easy to be unsuccessful, or to be criminals. Not just Denard. His story is a lot of guys' stories. And a lot of his teammates' too.

as Denard said, it is difficult to be uncommon, that is not follow the flow of dropping out, doing drugs, etc.

The kids who transcend that stuff should be applauded.
