MSU undergrad: Geological Sciences UIUC masters: Geological Sciences, focus in Igneous Petrology and Isotope Geochemistry, some Volcanology UTEP doctorate in progress: Geological Sciences, focus in Igneous Petrology, Isotope Geochemistry, and Volcanology. Specialization in non-traditional stable isotope behavior in high-temperature systems. Looks like I'll be transferring at the end of 2013 to follow my advisor to his new job and finish my research.

Let's be honest, engineering research and healthcare research is an apples to oranges comparison. I'm sure engineering research is a very involved process, but I would be willing to guess that you don't have to go through the hurdles of using human subjects and going through an ethics committee. We come up with an idea, design the entire study, submit the finished idea to an ethics committee/institutional review board (which depending on institution takes 3 months give or take to review and deem the study ethical before you can even begin using human subjects), recruit subjects over a period of time, establish informed consent, collect/interpret data, and write the manuscript. It's a time taking process, and it's something that we do in our spare time when we aren't learning how to become healthcare professionals. Again, the focus of my grad program was to train us to become entry-level clinicians and to prepare us to sit for state board licensure to practice. Research was a small part of what we did. Not sure if that counts as 'real graduate work' in your book.
