Where do you stand on people who go into work sick?

  • Last week one of my co-workers came into work sick and as a result got two or three others sick, including myself. He is your typical come in early, stay late over-achiever type. I had plans to go mountain biking this weekend and was looking forward to it. Wound up lying around the house, watching TV and posting on the RCMB.

My ruling on this is: dick move. My company gives out sick time (in addition to vacation time). If you have sick time, use it. That's what it is there for. You are not so important that the office will cease to function with you gone for a day or two.

Now, if you don't get sick/vacation time at your job, and your boss is a total dick who might fire you if you call in, and you make hourly wages and can't afford to miss a day's work, then I can understand your need to go into work sick.

  • Don't fucking do it. I HATE when people in my office do this. With all the work-from-home options out there, do that. Or use a sick day.

  • It's a complete dick move. Hate when people do it.

  • At my office, your sick days and vacation days are given out in the same allotment. People do it all the time and it totally pisses me off, I have gotten sick twice because of this. It does not really happen anymore because I shame those around me into going home when they come in sick. I'm relentless. Fuck them.

Nobody likes being coughed on while being asked if they have any spare tickets thumbsup.

  • The company I work for is a year old this week. We started a damn plague in November last year because nobody wanted to not work.
Hard rule now that the place is rolling. Don't come in sick.

This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.

As fat as possible? Sounds pretty fat.

  • For lawyers, it really just depends on what's happening. If you have a deal closing, you are going to have to suck it up and be in the office. It sucks for you and for everyone around you, but you have to do it. If you're not that busy or could do your work from home, then it's a total dick move.

Also (and fortunately I work for partners who generally understand this), it's generally far better to stay home for a day or two, rest, and actually get better, rather than dragging into the office and making the sickness last forever. If you're working sick, you're probably not doing your best work.

  • With the economy in the dumpster my GF's employer has enacted a new vacation/sick time policy. Essentially there are no sick days. These employees have to make a choice to either come into work sick or lose their vacation time.

Unfortunately, in prior years certain employees would take advantage of "sick days". Some with 2-3 weeks of sick days used in a year. Screwed it up for everyone else. Now with jobs hard to find, nobody can afford to leave. Perhaps as the job market improves, people will leave and they'll amend the policy.

  • If it's head cold sick and there's lots of work to be done, sack up and get to work. If it's vomiting and shitting everywhere sick and/or there isn't anything pressing to be accomplished, then stay home.

  • Stay the f at home. Granted if your staying too much the f at home, then that's mgts problem.

  • Sack up and go to work. If your co-workers are so sickly that their immune systems can't fight off germs and viruses, then that is on them.

Not sure what industry she is in but in IT this isn't true. They can't find enough qualified people to fill the open positions.

    Yep..

To make matters worse, she just had breast cancer surgery and will undergo both chemo and radiation in the coming weeks and months. Her boss is trying to bend the rules a bit by not making her account for her time off for these treatments. But, when you boil it down, she's breaking the rules.

Sucks on a number of levels. On a positive note though, her long-term prognosis is good.

  • The first year I was married I got a job in a boat manufacturing plant running the tool room. My job was to hand out the company air tools every morning and collect them at the end of the day, and also dispense the small parts needed for the boats. This meant I came into contact with everyone in the plant several times a day. One Thursday I went to work with a sore throat that escalated into a fever and vomiting with severe dizziness.

I told my foreman I was going home because I was sick and he said if I left I was fired and if I didn't come in the next day not to come back at all. So I stayed at work and showed up on Friday too. By Monday I felt better. But, because I had to stay at work sick, I infected almost the entire production crew. Only about 25% of the crew was there on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday. The plant manager gave me hell for coming to work sick and causing the crew's illness, but when I told him what the foreman said to me he calmed down. From then on, if someone was sick, they were told to GO HOME, and not come back until they were over it. Sometimes it takes this type of situation to wake management up.

work from home is a way to give employees time that they don't have to account for using vacation or personal time.

  • The flip side to this is that people abuse "calling in" and take advantage of it. I like to keep a record of people who call in on Monday and Friday or the day before a holiday. I would rather the dude came in looking like shit and asked to leave then just calling in...

    WarSpartans31329

  • We have all our vacation/personal/sick days combined, so the less sick days I take the more vacation I get. So if I'm physically able, I usually will drag myself in.

It's not about "sacking up." It's about doing the responsible thing and recuperating, so that way you get healthier faster and don't drag out your sickness while at work, prohibiting your own production, and causing others to get sick. This is why companies give out "sick time." If you are sick, use it.
