Fuck rafting

Are you only looking at places in MI? West Virginia is the shit for WW rafting, and isn't that far of a trip.

If you want to stick in MI, just rent tubes on the AuSable and drink beer on the river. That's a great group trip, IMO.

I looked at Pennsylvania and Tennessee but those seemed more like family trips (lower rapid classes) and they didn't have good areas to camp around. Not sure how far it is to West Virgina but we don't more than about an 8 hour travel.

WV, Songer campground is the shit. I did both the upper and lower gaully and they were both a ton of fun. The upper is for more advanced rafters and the best chance you will die type shit and is in the fall. The lower is tough too but not nearly as bad and in the spring. Ask for the guy who owns the bar on the campground to be your guide, I think his name is Jared and tell him you want the real ride. You will not be sorry. This guy legitimately has the best life in the world, he owns the bar on the campground, is a whitewater rafting guide from april-oct, and then is a snowboard instructor oct-march in Colorado. Seriously, eff that guy.

Thanks for the advice. I checked and West Virginia is about 8 hours away so I will look into this.

I've had good look with Ace as well...a lot of the rafting companies down there have consolidated, so I can't tell one from the other anymore. Camping and rafting in WV (even when water is low) blows away anything in MI.

Can't go wrong with the New (my favorite in the Spring/Summer) and the Gauley (some of the best/scariest WW in the country in the Fall).

The local WV "establishments" can provide many bizarre and unforgettable memories as well.

I grew up in iron mountain. No way in hell I'd drive up the to go rafting on that river. Go to WV. New River is a blast, especially if the river is near flood stage.

Well it looks like WV is the way to go. Thanks for the answers. I guess I will start checking out rates.

Yeah I'd say the closest places are in WV. I've done the Upper Gauley which was intense. A little farther in Tennessee/NC is the Nolichucky which is also higher difficulty or the French Broad which is a beginner river.

I'm sure there are more beginner level rivers in WV but I'm not sure.
The Snake river in Wyoming was a good beginner/intermediate river too, but fricken cold

Went rafting on this river 5 or 6 years ago (have a cabin by Menominee). Really fun and was a full day of rafting. Didn't camp there but the Wildman Ranch looked like a fun place to hang out and camp. There's one part of the river that has nice drop (class 4 rapids) that you go through twice.
