Who Makes a Better Sandwich in Lansing than Jersey Giant?

  • I've always thought that JG was way overrated. I've only had it a couple times, but it never seemed worth the drive or the money.

RIP vbulletin. Bring back Rich Rod!

The money? That huge sub is like $6

I remember it being 7 or 8. Maybe I'm wrong.

Listen, the East Coast Club at L&H's was fantastic, but it was no Jersey Giant (and by that I mean not only the shop but the sandwich which bears its name).

East Coast was the way to go

but it's an invalid comparison because the EC was hot and Jersey Giant subs were cold.

I used to consider JG a healthy option vs. Lou Ha's

The grill also used to make a decent Philly cheese steak. I'm assuming that Big John's Steak & Onion is the only game in town on that front now - I'm surprised no one mentioned that place

I believe you can still get the S&O at any of the Lou Ha Deli's.

Welcome to the world of sub sandwiches. They are supposed to be more than 50% bread

Yeah, but not like 85% bread, and I've definitely had JG subs that were in that range if not higher. I'm not saying that I dislike JG, I go there once every couple years, but I know several people that either don't like it or others that prefer Jimmy Johns.

Sorry, but this is not my experience. The meat is always hanging over the bread from every side. I don't see how JG is 85% bread.

Sorry but most of the times I've eaten there it looked like this...mostly bread. Some people like that, some don't.

Jesus, I'd hope there is a better sub place in that area than Jersey Giant. Are there no good delis with quality pastrami and corned beef anywhere nowadays?!?

Jersey Giant is mediocre at best.

Jersey Giant is the best in Lansing but second IMO to Intermission Deli in Saginaw.

These are my top two as well, but I give the nod to JG.

  • Jersey Giant sucks. The nostalgia of the place is better than the sandwich itself.

Yep, very good. We eat at Schwartz's quite often. I think they're somehow related to Jersey Giants if not owned by the same guys. I could be wrong on that though.

Wow, I have never had a sandwich look like that from JG. Maybe they just don't like you. shrug

They are affiliated. Not a fan of Schwartz's. I thought their pickles were awful. Also not a fan of a deli that microwaves their corned beef and pastrami in pre-portioned saran wrap. It should be in a crock pot or some such device, warmed throughout the day, stewing in it's juices, and be ready to be put on sandwiches at any moment. That's how a real deli does it.

Schwartz's bread is good though. I think it's bought in though

    WavSpartan

  • Dude it's a bread on bread sandwich with oil and vinegar. I always thought it was an economy sub place.

The deli in Okemos is much better. New York style deli sandwiches are MUCH better than a Jersey Giant sub. They are not bad, but like people have alluded to, it's mostly bread and the taste is generic.

#8 at the Frandor location from last Fall....Not too much bread:

PS In regards to Jersey Mike's, that place is a poor man's Jersey Giant at best. They definitely use bread that is "too much" and isn't very flavorful. Their oil&vinegar is weak and they put tons(like a heap) of lettuce on their sandwiches. I have eaten at 3 different locations in 3 different states and they have all been the same. I even had them build me a "#8 Jersey Giant" and the taste wasn't even close to being as good as the real thing.

........damn fine point: TOO much bread considering what they cost. Their flavor is righteous though.....that OIL...........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

NO ONE. I live in Chicago, and from what I've found, only JP Graziano's in the West Loop compares to Jersey Giants.

You should try Bari Italian Subs on Grand just West of May street if you haven't already. They close before 10:30 but the bread comes fresh from the bakery next door and the meat and toppings are superlative.
