Who Should Shoot Game-Icing Free Throws?

  • MR. Universe said...

he hasn't missed yet. ride him while hes hot

Problem with Thornton is he's likely to not catch the ball or fall over on the court. Last time we tried to give him the ball late in a game was against Oakland, and he just fumbled the ball away.

ya i know he really shouldn't be in the game in any critical situation.

Being a great FT shooter overall does not necessarily mean he's a great crunch time FT shooter, and Kalin Lucas himself is living proof of that. Kalin is an 80% FT shooter who shoots 50% in crunch time... we just don't know how Keith would respond as a freshman shooting important free throws in a close Big Ten game. Izzo wants more experienced players at the line when the game is close, but I do think Appling is special and will soon be one of the guys with the ball in his hands at the end of the game.

True but who on the team has been clutch from the line this season? That's my point. Even if he drops from 95% to 85%, he still would be the top choice on the team. Obviously he's unproven but I'd be willing to bet that a perfect formed, career 90%+ FT shooter like Keith would do pretty well in tight situations, or at least better than the other options that are currently available. Just because he's a frosh shouldn't matter.

  • Keith was on the court in crunch-time for a reason yesterday. He isn't going to turn it over, which is why next year he will be getting PG minutes. People will say he doesn't have the assist numbers, but with Draymond and KLIFx2, he's not being asked to distribute this year, just shoot and score.

  • Well i went through all the box score play-by-plays and i have the actual statistics. I was surprised. I'll repost them as their own thread.

Free throw shooting in the final two minutes of the game (or overtime) when the score is within 6 points (2 possessions), this season AND last season:

    Lucas: 18-24, 75% (5-8 this season)
    Lucious 5-8, 63% (4-4 this season)
    Summers 6-11, 55% (1-2 this season)
    Green 9-16, 56% (2-5 this season)
    Morgan 10-11, 91%
    Allen 2-2, 100%

So there you go. We need Morgan and Allen shooting those free throws. Seriously it's really interesting to go through old box scores and see how things line up with our skewed memories. It was great looking at the Maryland game and seeing that neither team shot any free throws in the last few minutes. That made it such a great ending. It's interesting to see the trends: Lucas usually makes both or misses just the first. Summers tends to miss the 2nd one. Green, with only one exception, either made both or missed both.

None of the numbers this year are great, but it looks like Lucas is the man, Lucious the #2, with Appling or Thornton maybe worth taking a chance with. Summers and Green not so much.

  • Nice job, Mark. I didn't really expect anyone to pull those stats but it's very interesting.

I wonder if Morgan's one miss was the intentional miss against Tennessee.

    Exactly, that was the one.

Nice work Mark. Both these data sets show Durrell and Draymond as a liability. Kalin has taking this team a long way and Iz will ride him till the end.

  • Paul Davis.

    Greenup

  • I'd put my money on Kool Keith, followed by Roe and Summers. Lucas and Lucious have both choked recently against Minny and Northwestern.

    Michigan State...we run this mitten!

    Phillips224

  • Of the players who are likely to be in the game in an under two minute barn burner, I'd rank them like this...

    1) Appling
    2) Lucious
    3) Lucas
    4) Summers
    5) Roe
    6) Green

  • Recall these clutch Free Throws for KLIF 2 years ago... He hit all 5.

  • I have been saying lucious since long before the Maryland game. He is cold blooded and you can see it in his walk. What's more he knows he is ice cold and that makes it better.
