Who's the next Thornton?

Who's the next glue guy that came from nowhere to earn a spot in the starting rotation? Who's the next Tim Bograkos? The next Jason Andreas? The next Austin Thornton?
Is he on the team now? I'm interested to see who the next unsung hero is.

Hopefuly no one, Thornton was great his Senior year but a walk on playing means something did not go right. They are fun stories for the press but that is about it.

This. Thornton didn't earn a starting spot. He was put in there when Dawson went down... and Jason Andreas sucked. We're Michigan State, not Butler.

Not true at all. Thornton was starting way before DJ went down buddy. Wood earned his spot BACK after DJ went down.

There is no next Thornton. And if he exists, he may not be on his HS varsity team yet. MSU is going to be pretty close to full on scholarships, and with the depth, it's unlikely that someone would pass up a scholarship somewhere else. Byrd has a much higher ceiling than Thornton. Gauna I guess can be that guy, since he's local like Thornton, but he again has a higher ceiling. Gauna is either going to do nothing, or be a much more productive player than Thornton.

If your "walk on" was one of the 5 best players in the state regardless of school size, in its best year in decades, I think it's OK for him to play.

The OP didn't say the player had to be a walk-on or not have potential.
I think what the OP is asking is what player will surprisingly exceed next years expectations and significantly provide more production than preseason perception predicted?

Was he one of the 5 best? Trying to remember who all was in that class. I'm guessing, but I came up with Lucas, Summers, younger Crawford, Harris, Tucker and Southern. I feel like there was at least one more as well, if those guys were all actually in that class.

Izzo said at one of his tournament pressers that he's always going to have a Bograkos/Dahlman/Thornton-type player on the squad because of his own background.

Thornton > Dahlman. It's hard/impossible to say who the next will be, but I believe that Izzo's style always leaves the door open for a guy who tries hard and buys into the system. Thornton went from a liability to a leader who played a very important role in several games. I don't know that one guy will become a Thornton-like player in the next 4 years, but Izzo coaches in a way that any/all of our players could fill that role. In my opinion, Thornton was an above average high school player who bought into Izzo's system and became a solid rotation guy by his senior year because of it. Izzo is a good enough coach to turn any above average HS player into a Thornton. It's hard to say who will be the next, but it's irrefutable in my eyes that there will be another Austin Thornton in the next couple of years.
