Why does the big10 love the rose bowl so much?

  • I agree 100% with this column. Why are all the big10 ADs and Jimmy Delany so worried about making the rose bowl involved in a playoff? Nothing like having a "home game" for the big10 1500 miles away just to keep the rose bowl involved.

""It would be a competitive advantage to have semifinal games at home fields … but the bowls have been good to us," Nebraska AD Tom Osborne said." What the does that mean? Good to you? Like how most schools lose money with ticket requirements?

Big Ten surrenders fight to bring college football playoff to the Midwest, just to help the Rose Bowl - Yahoo! Sports

From Yahoo! Sports: The Big Ten handed the SEC and Pac-12 a victory in one of the biggest sticking points of a playoff, all because of a misguided love for the Rose Bowl.

  • The Rose Bowl is all that matters. It is the goal.

It's not the BCS National Championship Game logo that's plastered all over the practice field and Skandalaris Center, it's the Rose Bowl logo.

The Rose Bowl is just the symbol of a B10 championship, that's the real goal. I know there's a lot of B10 history in Pasadena, but there's very little MSU history.ß

I'd rather go to a playoff game at the Rose Bowl than a playoff game at the Shoe or the Big Hole. Fuck off with your straw man.

Some here would give away the B1G-Rose Bowl relationship in return for Alabama getting another two home games.

Because under the current system the title game is meaningless and a farce. It's a made up title that serves no one.

The Rose Bowl is an awesome setting, its traditional, it's always had the B1G's back, both parties have made a lot of money off of each other and it's the one major bowl that has stayed true to its roots/mission.

That being said...I have no problem with it being excluded from a playoff. Send the winner of the B1G Champ game to a playoff and the loser to the Rose Bowl...same with the PXII. You'll still get sweet match up between two really good teams that represent the style of the B1G and PXII most years. Plus you'll reward division winners who generally have good seasons.

It's not like the RB has ever concerned itself with the MNC before...why should it start now?

In fact I think the 3 old BCS major Bowls should say screw the BCS and follow the same pattern.

B1G FCG runner up v. PXII runner up in Rose Bowl
ACC v. BE in Orange Bowl
SEC v. B12 in Sugar Bowl

The Fiesta can go back to its roots as a mid major bowl...It's a shameful organization anyway. (Though I think the cotton Bowl should be raised to a higher level...)

Reserve New Years Day to spotlight those three games. (No Playoff on NYD).

  • Other than the BCS title game the Rose Bowl is the most prestigious and recognizable bowl game there is. The Big Ten gets the Rose Bowl every year (mostly), the BCS title game has only had a Big Ten team a few times. I disagree that it is a higher goal than the BCS title game though.

  • Rose Bowl is great and all but I don't understand why b10 loves it so much. It's on the opposite side of the country in the PAC12s back yard. Never made sense to me. Have USC come play at Lucas Oil every year and see how they like it.

Exactly. Some posters are droning on and on about "tradition" and all that bullshit, but in the last 11 Rose Bowls, 6 teams came from outside the B1G/PXII (Miami, Nebraska (as a member of B12), Oklahoma, Texas (twice), and TCU). In that same span, there were 5 Rose Bowls that didn't feature the B1G champ (02, 03, 06, 07, 08) and 3 that didn't feature the PXII champ (02, 05, 11).

I'll take a shot at a national title over playing in the Rose Bowl. College football is changing for the better. Time to evolve or get left behind.

I will agree that the Rose Bowl is the granddaddy of all the exhibition games they play at the end of the season.

Yawn. It's another flawed system. Also, the Big Ten is never going to be left behind in any of these decisions. It is too powerful of a conference.

That's the thing that frustrates me most. Before the BCS, the Rose Bowl and many other bowl games weren't exhibitions because they actually did matter in who was going to be voted #1 to claim a national championship.

I only support two ways forward for college football:

    1. Abandon the bowl system and create a 16-32 team NCAA playoff.

    2. Go back to the pre-1994 system. Regular season, traditional bowl matchups, and then the pollsters can vote on who the champion is.

Agree 100%. Those are the only two options that make sense to me.

It's such a simple resolution. I fail to understand my money is emphasized over logic these days.

It's the difference between getting a burrito at Taco Bell versus a burrito at Mi Pueblo in Mexicantown. Sure it's cheaper at Taco Bell, but is that what you really want?

  • Money and tradition.

Rose Bowl pays out $17 million. That's guaranteed cash for the conference and each university. BCS deck is stacked against the Big Ten, so that guaranteed payout is worth protecting.

    How old are you?

    ByTor20084

  • Interesting all the different views in this thread. For all of the Rose bowl people, how old are you? I am 25 and none of my friends (MSU and UW fans) care about the rose bowl as much as some in this thread. We enjoy watching it every year, but the idea that it would be the home site for a big10 team in a playoff is dumb to me. Maybe it's because I've never seen MSU in the RB, but I just don't care about making sure it is involved in the playoff like every big10 AD feels is necessary.

The "why" is the question here.

Why are so many people attached to a bowl game that MSU has participated in only once in the past 45 years? I wonder how Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and Iowa fans feel about it? Is it because it's normally the end result of a B1G championship?

And I have actually been to the game. I camped out the night before to get a good spot for the parade. I've seen the "pagentry." I just don't get how a fan base can be so completely tied to a game that they have never regularly participated in. Is it watching umAA get it's ass kicked on a regular basis that makes it special? Or for that matter, watching many B1G teams lose?
