Williams Exits EL Uncommitted

IMHO...we spend the remaining scholarships on OL. Even Plan B or C. Develop the hell out of them. We need the numbers and the competition would be good. We have no problem with recruiting WRs...let's start bringing in more OL.

We're already down to the Plan D and E level...maybe even further down the board. So long as the players are capable of eventually seeing the field, I agree with you.

  • I'm pretty sure that Coach D told Williams that he will accept his commitment only if he gets that fourth star.

We're lousy with linebackers and d-backs? You're gonna have to explain this. We've got the deepest LB core in the country and have young, talented DB's coming out of our ears in the near future. This is a Delton Williams thread. He's being recruited as a Defensive ATH and looks to be a LB/Safety Hybrid type player.

"Lousy with" in this context means "overflowing with."

Ann Arbor is lousy with ugly chicks. The SEC is lousy with professional football players.

That's a fairly accepted (but apparently not widely recognized?) way to use the phrase.

well, in 2009 (which would be seniors or RS JR now), we had: Barrent (4*) - retired due to injury Klatt (4*) - lots of injury problems Treadwell (4*) - lots of injury problems, played defense due to necessity as a FR Conway (3*) - lots of injury problems Reynolds (3*) - is now a DL

in 2008 we took 5 OL, but none of them really panned out except McDonald. This was Coach D's first full recruiting class though.

    in 2010, we had 4 OL recruits; in 2011, 3; in 2012, 3.

I'm not sure what a normal amount of OL is in a class (I'd guess 4-5 probably), which we had until 2011. Maybe they've just had trouble recruiting them, I'm not sure I'd say it's an "afterthought" though.

I don't think it's an afterthought, MSU's had bad luck that has snowballed. The guys who have retired or been hurt don't go to the show, and recruits want to play for coaches sending guys to the league. MSU ends up losing the injured/retired players, and doesn't get the recruits they want either, when the first guys don't get drafted.

Exactly. I'm kind of shocked that people are misinterpreting that, especially within the context of that post.

Consider we have not been in contact with Munger, Meadows and slow playing Knevel.

Also, Gall at Moeller would have been a Spartan had we offered. We didn't, so he is a Hurricane. (He OWNED that UM commit DT from MD earlier the year, Gall appears to be a very good player).

I trust our staff's ability to evaluate talent, but I am wondering if they are being too selective with OL. We need bodies All of these guys seem to be very talented.

The ONLY thing I can think of, they are happy in what they have seen in Kieler, Conklin, McGowan (who by all reports looked and played the part) and Higgins, and they can afford to be selective (only top level guys). But after seeing this line perform this season....and parts of the last few seasons...I wonder if our staff needs to re-calibrate their OL recruiting and development strategies.

Or perhaps because it has another meaning..like we're full of linebackers and DBs.

possibly. I'm not sure you can just pile on a couple more linemen every year because you've had injury problems though. You'd be taking away potential spots from other positions. And planning for bad luck generally isn't really the greatest strategy in the world. I would like to see at least 4 OL recruits per year, but I doubt the staff is looking at 5 guys, pulling 3 of them in and saying "eh, fuck it, good enough."

But after five years of piecing together a make-shift O-line, isn't it worth a try? Even for one recruing season, just shift some recruiting resources to the o-line.

I confess, I always thought it had slightly negative connotations. People, in my experience, tend to use it tongue-in-cheek in a faintly derogatory way: "New York is lousy with waiters who want to be actors."

I'll buy this explanation. Since this is the case, shouldn't we be doubling down/tripling down on recruiting a pipeline of truly great OLinemen.

You'd think we'd be doing that,,,,,but we whiffed on a bunch of the stud '13 kids, Benenoch de-commed & Norman isn't playing college ball. Finley's on board, but the numbers for '11 thru '13 are low, esp at the OT position. This needs to pick up beginning in '14, or we're going to see serious problems in the O-line in a few years.

Someone needs to direct the coaching staff to this thread. I don't want the program to suffer by completely ignoring the OL.

For that matter, someone needs to direct the staff to the threads talking about how we "have to" put in Kings, Burbridge, Arnett -- because they "have to be" better than Lippet, Fowler and Mumphery. Because guys on tRCMB... they know.

  • I saw Williams interviewed on the news last week and it sounded like his committment was all but a done deal, at least in his eyes. I think there is a serious possibility that we no longer have room for him. Of course I have no idea what's going on, and I guess we'll know by the end of the week, but from where I'm sitting, I think there is about a 50% chance that he doesn't end up green.

Delton Williams - (ATH) played safety and running back recruited by Mark Staten, Offensive Line Coach.

Um how about recruiting some 4/5 star O-linemen for a change? This has been our biggest gaping hole since you got here and huge need. Thanks.

Amen to that. Anyone who can't see that the root of the abysmal offensive performance this year resides with the O line.... the underclassmen laden, inexperienced and physically weak offensive line...doesn't have a pulse.

  • For the love of God, who said we should take plan C and D recruits just because they're OLinemen? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. If we were panicking on the O line, we would tap the JUCO ranks, not grab some kid who can't play for $hit and hope he suddenly grows two inches and his football IQ doubles. There's plenty of dead weight out there to throw on a depth chart. No, OLine recruiting hasn't gone as planned, but they will figure it out.

... and whoever is complaining about Alex Gall: the staff liked him on film until he came to camp and royally sucked, according to bystanders. I'm sorry you seem to be in love with his star ranking, but if the staff doesn't offer even after telling him to come to camp because they really want to see him in person, that's a much better review of the situation than whatever these recruiting sites say.

... and whoever thinks the OLine are the one's responsible for all of our offensive woes clearly know nothing about football, or haven't watched a single game this year.

Well, the OL certainly have been a big part of our offensive woes.

    Can't run block.

When you want to run a balanced O and you can't run the ball, you become one dimensional. When your WR's can't catch, it compounds the problem.

I realize Roushar is a big part of the problem, but the inability of the OL to get the job done causes problems in all phases of the offense no matter what play Roushar calls.

  • No, it's full of laziness: I am, in fact, too lazy to figure out the exact people responsible for posting such nonsense. What did I fail to understand, Hank Moody?

... and I agree, Ron Jeremy, it is a part of our team's offensive struggles, but it doesn't matter what they do if we can't catch the ball downfield. I don't like any O Line's chance against a stacked box.
