Win or Lose in Bloomington

  • Would you say that it would be the most important game in terms of momentum in the regular season? Indiana is a good team and their home court is even better.

With a win, the next few games at home, that look tough, could actually look much easier. Not only would the team be on board with even more confidence, but the country and 'anayists' will start jerkin' Izzo again. And hell maybe even some of you assholes will stop complaining.

With a loss, make no mistake, if you're going to lose on the road to someone it's the 7th ranked team in the US, but don't you think it'll hault momentum? With Payne and BJ finally showing up and Appling playing like he's channeling Lucas-- could it stall things with a loss?

You know that rivalry where you actually RESPECT the opponent? Yeah, it's Indiana to me. (Not our 'protected rivalry' Indiana, but this Indiana)

I really like Crean, but he can suck it come Sunday.

Here's to watching a great game.

  • This team is playing with some confidence. I think we're due for a good shooting game. Our win last night put us right in the title hunt whther we win or lose Sunday, but a win Sunday serves notice to the rest of the B1G that we are the favorites IMO.

  • Maybe this is a game that GH goes off on. Aren't a few of the IU players friends with him and they were begging him to go to IU with them? Or is that someone else I'm thinking of?

    Yeah that's him.

Not feeling very confident about a win, we just have such a tough time down there. Even when they were awful it was a struggle.

A win would be a huge bonus, I don't think it is a must win at all.

Pretty much this. Right now I have the legit title contenders tracked as follows:

    1a: Michigan
    1b: IU
    3: MSU
    4. OSU
    5. Minny
    6. Wiscy

If we lose on Sunday, I don't think this really changes. However, I do think a win would put us squarely at the top of the heap.

That being said, I would put my confidence level at like 15% that we'll come out of Bloomington with a win.

  • I am very happy that we got to play Wisconsin first. Even though they did beat IU I still feel like IU is the most talented team in the conference and that we had a better shot against Wisky.

Now that we have beat them, we have a ton of momentum going into Bloomington. I still think we lose it 71-65 or something like that, but it'll be a tough battle.

We definitely have a shot to grab it, but will have to play the best game of our season.

  • @ IU replaces @ Wisky for most important game in Izzo's tenure.

Seriously, I think a win provides great momentum, but a loss doesn't stop it. Izzo already said that he'd take a split in a heartbeat. They're playing with house money now.

  • Important? Yes
Most important? Its a long season.
What if they beat Indiana, then lose their next two home games? The Indiana win means little. Its all about consistency and your body of work. One thing I like about this team is they seem to have bought in to team defense, and if anything helps build consistency its team defense.

This. Seems like we just very rarely ever play well there.

Had to win last night, def takes pressure off the team on Sunday because IU is better and deeper on paper. Wisconsin not so much, they only made a game of it last night cuz game was played in Madison. Just my 2 cents. Indiana took wiscy lightly at home and prolly won't take any team lightly again this year.

I agree with this. MSU is the better team than Wisconsin, but every time we win in Madison, I feel like we stole something. I don't think anyone will be upset if we go 2-1 vs. OSU, @UW and @IU. But if we go 3-0 in that stretch? Look out.

  • the victory over OSU was the biggest game of the season so far.

  • I'd say last night was the most important, a win in bloomington would be icing.

My thoughts as well. I will be (very happily) surprised if our guys win this one.

  • I really don't like the concept of momentum. How much is momentum worth if MSU beats IU on Sunday but then loses to Illinois? Even if State wins on Sunday, it's only worth 1 win. This is a long season and I just want to see the team play better each game

    Victory for MSU!

Agreed. Winning at Wisconsin takes the pressure off for Sunday

That, and IU is not a good defensive team.

I think the W @Wisky was necessary to stay in the Big 10 title hunt. A W at IU is gravy, IMHO and as you say, would make MSU the favorites.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    SpartanRocky

  • I would not say that actually, win or lose. If we win, absolutely it's the most important game as far as momentum and propelling us to a B1G title. If that happens, no doubt you'll be able to point to a win in Bloomington as the reason for a B1G title. However, I don't think it's as big if you lose. Road teams in the B1G are not expected to win save for games against much lesser opponents like Iowa, Nebraska, and PSU. The other environments are incredibly difficult to play in.

The key to a B1G title is winning your home games and stealing a few on the road. A loss to the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall is not a big deal and shouldn't really haunt the team as far as momentum is concerned. Sure a blowout loss would do that, but if we show up and just come up a little short, I don't think it's as big of a deal.

  • It amazes me how easily people lose perspective or have short term memories.

MSU lost at Northwestern and at Illinois (41 points!) last year and still won the B10. They essentially held home court (until the last day of the season) and stole a few - not all - road wins.

The same thing applies this season. They stole a road win last night. If they hold serve at home and steal one more at IU, OSU, or UM they are going to be almost impossible to catch.

    Fletch

  • It would be a huge momentum boost for us but it's not necessary for us to win. I'm happy if we're .500 on the road and it's looking decent for us to do that.
