Windows Mobile Phones are %#&@!

  • My wife has one because she liked the style of phone and the sales person told her how great the OS is. Well, it fucking sucks. Everytime somebody has an app available that she wants, it is never supported by Windows and her Facebook app is constantly fucking up because developers of the Windows apps are apparently idiots.

    end rant

    Microsoft should just quit.

  • That will change with Windows Phone 8. Whatever runs on Windows 8 will run in W P8. Which is why many are predicting windows phones gaining market share fast.

So all of your reasoning to why Windows Phones suck have nothing to do with Microsoft or the OS itself? Got it.

It's a young mobile OS so of course apps are going to be lacking. That should change over the next year. Microsoft is pushing app development hard. Also, the shitiness of the Facebook app is not independent to WP7, it's shitty on all platforms. You can blame Facebook for writing their mobile apps as web apps & not in each platforms' native language.

  • The Lumia owners are getting screwed by taking a chance with them. The next Windows update will not be coming to them.

It took Android around 2 years to really get going too.

  • The OS is good from the time I've played with other people's phones, there aren't any powerful phones or apps for it yet though.

That said, I don't think i'll ever leave android.

  • I've had Palm, Android, iOS, and now WP7. WP7 has been by far my favorite. I don't care much about how many apps there are available, i have and iPad for apps. So just on a performance basis, WP7 has been the best. I never have to pull the battery out and it's always responsive.

I'm also an app developer and the main reason for the lacking apps is because of the lack of market share. Companies aren't going to spend $50k+ to develop for platform the has about 2% of the share. Almost every major app that's been released has been commissioned by Microsoft.

The biggest architecture difference between WP7 and the others is that when you navigate away from one app to another, or the home screen, the previous app is shut-down completely. That's the main reason why the battery life is great and the OS doesn't slow-down and require a battery pull. The other side of that is the app developers have to be good enough to know how to properly save the user's session state. Unfortunately, most developers suck and are lazy, so it gives WP7 a bad impression when it's the contracted developers that don't know what they're doing.

  • I'll vouch for Windows Phone 7. I love the OS, I think Microsoft did a great job with it but they're just too late to the game, which is a shame.

Any plans to open up a bluetooth api? As a developer, that's what I've been missing the most.

I could not figure out how to connect to an API using oauth 2. I'm not very experienced connecting to other services though so that may just be me.

OAuth isn't the easiest of APi's to implement on WP7 (or in general for that matter). I ended up using Azure ACS for my OAuth implementations.

Windows Phone 8 is not coming to today's Windows Phone 7 handsets. The closest they will get is Windows Phone 7.8 which is nerfed due to hardware limitations.

I want to know why I cannot share from the Video Roll to my application in much the same way I can share Photos and Music

Or, in other words, why is there no API into the Video Roll? Will there be an API in Windows Phone 8? I certainly hope so as I cannot enter my app into the marketplace until I get that support.

Along those same lines, this limitation seems to also exist for the Sharing Charm in the Windows 8 release preview.

  • I can't talk about future products, sorry guys.

  • FTR, WP7 just hit 100K apps. That is quicker than Android hit 100K apps.
