With Tressel outed...What are your thoughts on Matta?

  • Matta's recruting is a product of the one and done rule, where he's turned tOSU into a prep school for the NBA. He doesn't even pretend he's running a college program. They ought to just name that team the NBDL's Columbus Buckeyes.

Now, are they getting gifts and all kinds of other perks while they offer their services to the Bucknuts? Absolutely. It's Ohio State.

If Matta is legitimately getting those players he's the best recruiter since Calipari!

    2011:
    8 players from Ohio
    2 more from the Midwest
    1 from florida
    1 from serbia

    2010:
    7 players from Ohio
    4 players from the midwest
    2 players from europe

    2009:
    7 players from Ohio
    5 players from the midwest
    2 players from europe

    2008:
    8 players from Ohio
    3 players from the midwest
    2 players from North Carolina

    2007:
    8 players from Ohio
    3 players from the midwest
    1 player from North Carolina

for the guys growing up in Ohio, they grew up dreaming of playing for OSU. all Matta is doing is keeping kids in state and getting quality players from the midwest and sometimes reaching out to get guys. it's the same thing that Izzo has been doing, locking up in state guys and competing with other schools in other states for top players.

You're missing the point. If schools like Michigan State, Purdue, etc are attempting to follow the rules; the playing field isn't even close to level. Just think back to what happened to MSU in the 70's after we beat Woody. MSU got popped for doing the exact same stuff that OSU was at the time. The NCAA has created a situation of selective enforcement so that certain schools get away with things that others can't. If this had happened at MSU, the NCAA would be pressuring MSU to fire Dantonio and looking to give us a major punishment.

Do you really think MSU athletes aren't getting some perks? Do some drive nice cars or wear nice clothes and jewelry? I bet some do. They are not like the rest of the student population.

  • Easier to control 12 scholarship players than 85 and as others mentioned enough of his players who need/want money fast just leave early.

Why did Pryor do what he did? Couldn't sign with the NFL early enough so many of his flaws were exposed. He isn't an NFL prototype QB.

Yes, they have issues down there. At football games, during TV Timeouts, they play PSAs reviewing NCAA rules, telling people not to give things to athletes.

I haven't been down there in a while but they have similar ones at SS.

To Ernie's point, having grown up in Columbus, I think he is exactly right. Tressel doesn't have to actively cheat because in that town, with OSU athletes, it will happen on it's own.

I am not trying to say one way or the other about Tressel or Matta's involvement in these types things. But, IMO even the cleanest of coaches there will be reduced to trying not to know too much, which is where Tress found him self as of last April.

It happens everywhere to an extent, but when it comes to OSU sports, there is something in the water down there.

  • I think if Matta's true dealings were uncovered, it would make sweatervessel look like Mother Teresa.
