Worst umpire call EVER

  • Tiger v Gorilla said...

The guy behind home plate was probably a wimp

He he ain't gonna challenge the crew chief over that, he won't challenge anyone

Also , we rip on Leyland all the time, the fact mattingly wasn't thrown out after that is bad managing. He needs to let that ump have it. Leyland would have been tossed after that horrid a call

I'm not sure, but I thought umpires have to ask for help before another ump can say something.

Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub

Yes, that's how it works in baseball. No umpire is going to come in and overrule another one on a judgement call even if they know it was a blown call.

Ump had a bad angle on it. From where he was standing, it would have been hard to tell if his foot was on the bag.

It was a bad angle because he put himself into it. He had plenty of time to move into position and see whether or not the foot would be on the bag. No excuse for this call.

This...the one thing that baseball umpires are notorious for that other sports officials don't seem to have a problem with is not conferring with each other on a regular basis. It's practically drilled into you from day 1 of training not to ask for help if you're sure you got the call right. And by extension, you're taught not to offer assistance to your partner(s) unless asked by him.

It's a weird dichotomy of baseball umpires...You want to get the call right and interpret the rule correctly but you're strongly discouraged from asking for help in many situations even if it means potentially blowing the call.

Back around 2002-2006 (don't know exact years but know it included 2004) Sandy Alderson, the former GM of the A's was working for MLB overseeing the umps. He made it a point for the umps to work together and confer if a manager was challenging whether a call was right. During that period of time the ump work was solid and you would see plenty of conferring amongst the ump crews.

Alderson moved on to a different role and none of what he started stuck. If Alderson was still overseeing these clowns the Joyce call never happens and neither does this one because the umps would have had the balls to confer and overturn and obvious fuck up.

I'm not sure why the ump is even in that position? Seems like a real odd place for him to be standing.

  • Blame the other umpires more than the 1st base guy...from his angle it could have looked like he was on the bag, provided it was in a direct line of sight

100% How many times in football do we see refs pick up the flag? Does it hurt the game or our view of the quality of the refs? NO. Getting the call right should be the goal, regardless of whether an ump or ref looks bad.

If Welke was where he was supposed to be, and judging by the photo I cannot understand for the life of me why he is even standing where he is, he would get the call correct.

Watch the video. As the throw is coming across, he runs from near to the baseline area to that spot where he can't see the foot on the bag, putting him in the worst possible location.

Joyce didn't know about the miss until he saw the replay. He was dropping F-Bombs on Cabrera shortly after the call.

I guess I've never known that. It's been my belief all this time that Joyce played it over in his head out on the field and knew he blew it. I guess I don't have as much venom for the guy anymore.

Not sure why he would do that.

I didn't watch the game, I just assumed that Mattingly and the entired Dodgers team went apeshit, and that they would have asked for an apeal to the other umpires. An umpire won't ever willingly overrule another, but usually if the manager goes out they can at least get the guy that made the call ask the other umps.

How did Davey Lopes not go nuts? He must not have been watching either.

If Helton were six inches off the bag, you'd be right. But that's a few feet, easy.

  • OK, the title is 'umpire' and not 'ref' otherwise Joey Crawford would be upset at you trying to take his title away.

This isn't even his worst call, btw.

    Play

The Worst Foul Ever - Joey Crawford - Suns...

Before people come and nail me as a Blazer homer. I do not blame the refs on the outcome of the game (even though Camby got his 4th foul and had to come out... and it all went downhill from there). Blazers let it go and did not execute and ended up getting blown out by their own play. There are times to sit back and watch how bad the refs can be in the NBA (no matter what team you cheer for). And while Stern hates when people discuss them, there is a reason why sometimes. This might be one of the worst fouls called ever. My Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ichapod Small Desc: Foul is called on Brandon Roy, then changed to Marcus Camby... then Crawford says Camby fouled Nash... Nash shoots free throws... watch the video and you'll see why this could possibly be one of the worst calls ever. Also this went down as "Nash draws the foul on Camby" on espn and nba's website. Lots of different views on this one, but one things for sure something went incredibly wrong. You be the judge. *Update 4/29/10 - There seems to be some confusion, let me clarify that this foul was called as Camby fouling Nash. Here is a link to ESPN play by play 3rd period, scroll down to the 5:20 mark and you will see "Marcus Camby personal foul (Steve Nash draws the foul)" http://goo.gl/wJtX . *Note to viewers who are commenting, this video is not about NBA being rigged or if this was a game changer or not (thank god it didn't have that big of an effect). Do not manipulate my words to make it seem like I'm saying the Blazers only lost due to Joey Crawford. I do not think this and have stated it above already. This video is purely about a missed call, a really badly missed call that made absolute no sense. Just sit back and look at it in that context and 'enjoy'

Joey Crawford is a piece of shit who should have retired 15 years ago.
