Worthy: "I take plays off, just like everyone else."

  • I have to agree with him, and I am sick of all the scouts saying he was lazy/took plays off. I mean, show me the last D tackle that dominated every single play.

That said, probably good that he waited until after the draft to drop that little nugget of info.

Jerel Worthy: I take plays off, just like everyone else | NFL.com

Jerel Worthy is fully aware some people believe he was a dog at Michigan State. The new Packers DE said this week that, yes, he does get tired. But then again, what football player doesnt?

  • I don't know everything about football but this makes sense. Seems like even the best athlete would pass out going all out every time. Especially a guy that big.

  • From the article to which that blog links:

When Worthy played with high energy and passion, he was a one-man wrecking crew. University of Wisconsin fans probably remember Worthy burying Montee Ball for a 4-yard loss and the Spartans notching a safety one play later when the teams met in October.

Niicccce. At the Wisconsin game last year, when they were up 14-0 I said to the people I was with "Ya know, U of M scored first, we'll come back, no worries." Well this Bucky douche heard me and goes "Well this aint Michigan!"

Then him and his buddy left after MSU went up in the 2nd half, before UW even came back to take the lead! Douchers.

  • Worthy did sometimes have something extra. As a spartan he did a great job of picking the right moments, like the Wisconsin example. I've got no problem with that.

Does every WR run every pattern flat out? No, but when they show the ability to kick it in they are considered a "big play" guy. For some reason for worthy the focus has become his "off" plays. Perhaps because his "on" plays are so dominant?

  • Ugh im still mad about him being called offsides in the B10 title game. he just timed it perfectly. god damnit.

  • Apparently the morons in the comments section equate, "I don't go all out every play" to "I don't go all out every play because I'm a big pussy and I don't like being tired".

The point was that you have to save a little for the 4th quarter.

  • Jesus, a guy his size cant go 100% every damn play! Can he? The stamina that those big boys have is amazing.

  • He's a 300+ pound man do people expect guys his size to be able to dominate every play of every game? absolutely not, any talk of him being lazy is greatly exaggerated.

Being called a sunshine blower is not insulting to me and I'm proud to be one.

    They do.

  • What's amazing is when you hear the critiques on the DTs picked ahead of him, nearly every critique was actually worse, such the Memphis DT who "often did not dominate lesser competition."

Notice how not one single writer has written about how Worthy:
    A) Anchored the #1 D, #6 rated overall, in the B10
    B) Was double teamed and the focal point for OLs every game
    C) Played 5 games this year against All-American Centers, 3 of which went to teams in the draft, and the fourth is in camp as FA. And he, at times, dominated each one.
    D) The OL at the combine said Worthy was the best DL they faced. Evidently, they didn't get the memo that he was lazy....

I feel the player rankings are very similar to the college (Rivals) rankings. If you dont get rated (by paying) by the right person you dont get the hype.

Before the the draft I listened to a segment on the radio where they had a on guy who tests and rates players. He never really answered any question but kept saying, "I cannot go into that too much teams pay a lot of money for that information".

The Memphis guy wasn't even an all-Conference USA level performer. That is pretty shocking. He wasn't even the best dude in a terrible conference.

I know, that was hysterical. They kept praising his "potential."

  • In the end, who cares? He is going to get a nice check playing for one of the best teams in football. I really dont think he could have ended up in a better situation. He might be making a little less coin, but he will have legitimate chances at a Super Bowl.

    BlakeStSpartan

  • Just because it's true doesn't make it a smart thing to say. He really should've just left it at, "I plan on proving everyone wrong by going all-out for the Packers on every play."

  • Maybe Worthy took a play off on 2nd and long, but he went beastmode every time in key situations flex. And it showed in his play.

    Spartan313

  • Worthy is a measured player. I think that's a good thing. He knows what he has to do when he has to do it. Defensive tackle is a brutal position. Cracking pads with other behemoths and taking on double teams all game long. If he attempted to go balls out on every play he'd render more useless as the game goes on. Even when he isn't making the flashy play he's still occupying space and closing holes. But then he knows when to turn it on and burst through the line.

For as many times as he jumped the snap count and was in the QB's face before he could look up, he was bound to be offsides every now again. I didn't mind it due to the amount of positive plays he created.

I felt the same way. Worth the risk/reward in certain situations.
