Would you have booted Mathieu?

If you were coach, assuming it was a 3rd failed test for pot that got him kicked off.

Honestly, I would have swept anything short of legal trouble under the rug for a guy of that caliber.

If it was our beloved program, I would want strike 1 to require attending a recovery program of some sort and warning, strike 2 would be suspension for some length, and strike 3 "he gone." The program is bigger. Even if "just pot", it's still "just illegal."spartan2

  • There an odd NCAA rule with this that came up when Syracuse basketball had a similar decision to make. If a team or school does in-house testing (which they aren't required to do), they have to take action of some kind when positive results are discovered.

Moral of the story: don't test for drugs unless you want to suspend or expel players for drugs

For the record, I think weed is basically harmless and should be just as legal as alcohol if not more. But, man, there sure are a lot of people who throw everything away because they don't want to stop smoking it. Right now, I have a buddy who's a smoker and he's got some trouble with the law, nothing big deal, but he starts Probation in 3 weeks and he knows he's getting tested, he still smokes everyday after swearing a couple weeks ago that he'd quit, he's got an asshole judge and is risking jail time to smoke weed right now. Likewise, I know a lady whose been applying for jobs as she is desperate for work, she lives in a small town up north so it's been tough for her and her family. She and her husband have some health problems so getting a job is really important for the health care. She's applied to an airline and bingo, got offered the job, well of course there's a drug test that she now has to try to cheat. It literally could mean life or death for her if she doesn't get health insurance and she couldn't quit weed so she didn't have to worry about a drug test preventing her from getting a job.

If you know that weed could cost you a job, your freedom, or a college scholarship, and a chance to make millions playing pro football, quit fucking smoking weed, what the hell is wrong with people?

    Bang!

The post of the thread right here.

was also reading people commenting that if this is his 3rd failed test, he is ineligible to play, Les sweeps it under the rug, plays him, it comes out that he was ineligible, their entire season is fucked.

  • The failed drug test is a smoke screen. He's not the only LSU player getting high, and there's no way Miles would kick a player of his caliber off the team over weed. He did something more serious, but we may never know what it was.

  • If he's doing more than weed, he might not be all that great of a teammate and might be bad in the lockerroom. Who knows. You can't say you would or wouldn't unless you know everything.

IF it was his third time with only weed
IF he was great in practice
IF he was good in the lockerroom
IF it was an in house test

I'd find a way to keep him on the team.

Yeah I think the kid probably had a habitat of putting himself ahead of the team. Some people have really weird values when it comes to drugs. I could see Les being one of these people who thinks paying players is just part of the game, but getting high is a truly criminal offense.

No way any coach in the SEC has that mentality about weed.

  • Anyone believing that was only his "3rd" strike is smoking something themselves...unless it was administered by NCAA, not LSU, leaving them with no choice.

  • I really think the reason he got booted off was a combination of matheiu doing something very serious and LSU being afraid of recent NCAA crackdown.

I think matheiu might have raped someone orpulled a gun out on someone.

And with NCAA bringinng the recent haers down on UGA, PSU, and OSU, I think they didnt wanna take a chance

  • I don't have a problem with weed, and I probably wouldn't drug test looking for weed. Anything else illegal, one chance.

However, if it was his 3rd failed test you gotta boot him. That's disrespect for the Coach's rules. Moreover, WOTS is that he was a clubhouse cancer.

Guy of what caliber? He was torched by Bama in the BCS title game.

Rape? Highly doubtful. Violence or gun trouble? Possibly.

I just read ESPN the Magazine's new issue which I got yesterday. There is a full article there on him (obviously printed before he was kicked off) that forewarns people about him and kind of gives you an idea of how he grew up. Never knew his parents, father went to prison for murder when he was just 2 or 3. Mother gave him up, he talks to her on the phone but no real relationship. Was raised by his aunt and uncle who had 3 children. His high school was impacted by Katrina and it impacted his football as well. Didn't have a lot of big-time scholarship offers but Les Miles took a chance on him.

He seems like a very conflicted individual with little support or care from those closest to him. Hope he gets help and becomes a success story.

Schools test for it. I believe the NCAA does only randomly or during bowl season. At most schools first failed test is just a warning. Second test they call the parents and possible discipline.

I was about to post something similar. People say pot isn't addictive, but for some it is just as addictive as any other drug.

I know a chick who tested positive once at work and was on "probation" for a year. Basically she got a random test every month. Well, the dumbass kept smoking and got popped again. Bye, bye job!

Like you, I don't think weed is that bad, but it's illegal and it is what it is. People still risk everything to get high. I don't get it and never will.

Mathieu KNOWS he will be a HIGH (no pun intended) draft pick and yet he continues to smoke weed. You really don't get any more ignorant than this guy. Throw you future away just to get high.

  • Absolutely.

I don't care if it's "just weed". The fact that he knows it could land him in hot water and kept going shows that he's a selfish person who's putting his own desires above those of his teammates and the program. Mathieu's teammates have to be able to trust him to stay out of trouble, because that directly impacts the team's chances for success.
