Would you have booted Mathieu?

    You're kidding, right?

The Oregon football team was having coordinated post-practice blunt sessions the year they went to the BCS Championship Game. I really don't think you can argue that it's detrimental to the program.

    No.

Guy smokes weed while most of the rest of the team is drinking anyway, no legal trouble.

    or

Kick a top 5 player in the nation/Heisman contender off the team and reduce your team's title hopes significantly.

Which one seems like it would hurt the program more?

The Honey Badger fucked up. To let it go with no consequences is bad for the program.

    Here's the Clif's Notes:

"Former Ducks, including current pros, estimate between 40 percent and 60 percent of their teammates puffed; current Ducks say that range remains accurate."

"according to an NCAA study released in January, 22.6 percent of athletes -- up 1.4 percentage points from the previous study in 2005. College football players (26.7 percent) ranked the highest among major sports."

Over one quarter of college football players actually told the NCAA that they smoke marijuana. How many more players smoke weed but didn't want to tell the NCAA about it for fear of getting in trouble?

NCF - Oregon Ducks don't deny the drug culture in Eugene - ESPN The Magazine - ESPN

Marijuana and Eugene, Ore., have always been tied together like laces in a football. That suits some players from the local college football power just fine, writes Sam Alipour in ESPN The Magazine.

Well I guess more kids should smoke if this is the case. It.s a good thing, right?

    That was my original point...

Drugs/alcohol are only blamed if it leads to issues on and off the field. What if Michael Jordan smoked every day of his life and still was the best player who ever lived? I'm sure most opinions would change on the matter. Mathieu was not smart enough to overcome his smoking hobby, but that doesn't mean others can't. It IS college.

What is that, a Titleist? A hole in one...

I challenge you to find one post where I say that college athletes "should" smoke weed or even something remotely similar. The only thing I'm advocating for is you shutting the fuck up about how athletes smoking weed is some kind of a big deal. It isn't. A very significant portion of college and professional athletes smoke grass, and to think that coaches are unaware of this is laughably naive.

Maybe it was more than just weed. I hope so, because if it's just weed he faces brutal ridicule in rehab. "Weed? You're in here for weed!!?? You ever suck dick for weed? Boo this man!!!"

If I had to take a guess, I'd say painkillers or speed. Both are easy to come by on a college campus and can lead to serious dependancy problems. I still think there's more to this than the drugs, though.

For the record, I think weed is basically harmless and should be just as legal as alcohol if not more. But, man, there sure are a lot of people who throw everything away because they don't want to stop smoking it. Right now, I have a buddy who's a smoker and he's got some trouble with the law, nothing big deal, but he starts Probation in 3 weeks and he knows he's getting tested, he still smokes everyday after swearing a couple weeks ago that he'd quit, he's got an asshole judge and is risking jail time to smoke weed right now. Likewise, I know a lady whose been applying for jobs as she is desperate for work, she lives in a small town up north so it's been tough for her and her family. She and her husband have some health problems so getting a job is really important for the health care. She's applied to an airline and bingo, got offered the job, well of course there's a drug test that she now has to try to cheat. It literally could mean life or death for her if she doesn't get health insurance and she couldn't quit weed so she didn't have to worry about a drug test preventing her from getting a job.

If you know that weed could cost you a job, your freedom, or a college scholarship, and a chance to make millions playing pro football, quit fucking smoking weed, what the hell is wrong with people?

    You can't fix stupid.

Happens with anything you're dependent on, alcohol, pills, gambling...

Kid should have been kicked off because rules are rules. I personally disagree with the rules as a fellow toker... but, until that changes... you either gotta quit or take your chances. Usually if you're bright you quit and save that bag for sunnier days.

  • Something that hasn't been discussed here (and I'm sure the "dope every day" advocates will dismiss it), is Leadership. Even in the absence of rules and enforcement of rules, Honey Badger is a high profile player and a senior leader of the team - whether he wants to be a role model or not. If his drug isn't an addictive one (hey, let's not blame the drug - it's harmless and should be legalized) then he's just a selfish douchebag who has no inkling of the responsibility of leadership. To choose his own recreational interests over those of his team because "everybody does it" is the opposite of the example that any coach wants his seniors to exhibit.

The name Honey Badger is perfect for this kid. Honey Badger don't give a shit. He reminds me of that old commercial: "There ain't no "I" in TEAM. But there is a "ME"." We can blame ESPN or Brent Musberger for elevating the kid to deity status, but it's still on the kid and whoever he takes his advice from.

B-jizzer argued that it's more detrimental to the program to dismiss him than for him to smoke daily and play. That is amazingly shortsighted, and is probably exactly what the stoners were saying who passed him the bong one too many times. The program will be better in the long run for it - even if they lose an extra game or two this year for lack of what Mathieu brought to the field.

This will probably end up costing Mathieu very little besides the negative publicity this year. He is insanely talented and will have a great pro career. This is a great chance for him to get his shit together and grow up. If he elects to blaze occasionally in his NFL off-seasons, then I won't hold it against him.

If he makes it a daily habit at the expense of his attention span and lung health, then he will only prove that he's still a selfish primadonna. With his talent, he'll still be effective, but he'll never realize his potential.

  • I've yet to see a football coach kick a good player off their team because he thought it might give him a chance to be a better person.

It could be the LSU football team has a pot problem, and getting rid of Mathieu is a way for coach to get everyone's attention.
