Would you take 10 wins pre bowl?

Fuck no. 9-3 is the floor for this team, and I don't think we really know where the ceiling is. I wouldn't give up the chance of watching MSU play for a national championship just to be guaranteed one more win than the baseline.

    lol

MSUs OL is nowhere near natty worthy, an with the plethora of new WRs, TEs, and a new QB...its funny how much kool aid some of you have.

I would lock down 9-3 right now if I could in a second with how hard the schedule is this year.

    This.

9-3 means that we won none of the close ones. That is the baseline for acceptability. Anything below that is underachieving.

It sounds crazy, but this team should be expected to win the legends division, and win the conference this year. With the returning defense, it's not an unreasonable expectation.

It's not insane to think that they could be in the national championship discussion if things break right.

The OL is experienced though, and that goes a long way. They know how to play as a unit and they have depth.

The QB thing is the only real sticking point. It's all on Maxwell and he will be tested early. The WR depth and talent is as good as it's been here.

The schedule this year isn't that bad. UM and Wisconsin on the road isn't too bad. There is no @Iowa or @ Nebraska or @tOSU. We get ND at home. It's a reasonable schedule.

I see the odds of 7-5 and 8-4 being about the same as 11-1 and 12-0, so yeah, I'll take 10 wins instead of 9.

If the WRs look good and Sims is healthy all year (doubt it, I broke that same bone in the wrist three times and it's a horrible break to have)... And Fowler and Lippett are healthy... Then I will look very stupid (not the first time) and this team can easily win 11 games.

Nothing will ever convince me that we should 'expect' to win @ Wisky, unless their newest hired gun QB goes down, then they will be very screwed.

Marriage is like flying with kids, if the flight had 500 connections, never ended, Ted Striker were your pilot and you ate the fish.

Unless the OL can make MSU a top 3 or 4 rushing attack in the Big Ten this year, I don't see it. Wayy too much homer to expect a dynamic passing game.

Hell, Cousins shit the bed in a few games last year, and he was on the best ever at MSU and had a lot of talent and experience at WR.

I think MSU has a LOT of talent in the WR corp. But MSU lost 2/3 of its games last year because they couldn't run the ball. Id expect teams to stack the box more with the inexperienced WRs.

If teams stack the box (like UM did last year and Baker still dissected them) I would be surprised. Our receivers might be inexperienced, but they have a lot of talent and Maxwell has been studying the position for three years. It wouldn't be wise for teams to assume that we can't throw. Arnett and Burbridge (assuming Burbridge qualifies) were both top 100 players and Maxwell is one of the highest rated QBs that we've ever landed. Teams assuming that we can't throw are taking a big gamble. Our QBs and WRs might not have the trust and innate sense of where to be and what to do that Cousins had with the WRs last season, but that doesn't mean that a talent upgrade at those positions won't still produce some positive results on the field.

10 wins is more likely to make tha B1G championship game than 9. I realize it's possible at 9, but it's more likely with 10. Give me a better shot at Roses than some random win against your rival.

So this argument got me thinking, and I tried to crunch the numbers. I don't remember my combinatorial math, so all these numbers are rather fuzzy. To simplify, I've assumed that a 10-2 season means MSU has a 5/6 chance to win any individual game, and they're all weighted equally--so Indiana is as likely a loss as Wisconsin (dumb, I know). As a result, the following percentages do not add up to 1, as those odds do give you a chance to go 11-1 or 9-3.

Anyway, in a two-loss season, there's a 48% chance to win all 4 non-con games, 39% to win 3, and 12% to win 2 (so 6-2, 7-1, and 8-0 B1G record). In a three-loss season with a guaranteed win over Michigan, those become 28% to win all 4, 42% to win 3, 24% to win 2, and 6% to win 1 (5-3, 6-2, 7-1, 8-0 B1G record, respectively). Then when you compare two possible records, the win over Michigan only matters if the two conference records are the same--more wins are more likely to make the conference champ. game, basically. Long story short, comparing the possible results from the two seasons, I think 9-3 with a win over scUM will be worse than 10-2 51% of the time, equal 24% of the time, and better only 23% of the time. I want a goddamn Rose Bowl, so I'll take 10-2...or 11-1, or 14-0 rockon

Teams assuming we can't throw...aren't you doing the exact opposite, assuming MSU can throw very well?

I think MSU will be a decent passing attack, but Im just not sure with all the inexperience.

I'm not trying to assume anything. I'm just saying that with the talent that we're bringing to the table, teams would be unwise to assume that we can't throw.

Well, if nothing else, the green_koolaid and press-clippings the players read this off-season won't be as emphatic next year

    Victory for MSU!
