Would you want to have total recall of everyday of your life?

  • While checking out msnbc, I found this in the Today show archives:

  • That would be nuts. I say yes toot although finals weeks would make me feel ill all over again and many of the close losses in football too...

  • And honestly, NO, I there are a lot of "selective memory" things I would rather not remember.

They remember the pain of every painful moment, the joy of every joyful moment, and just the mention of a situation brings them right back to that time and place emotionally.

I would rather not have that happen

I bought some batteries, but they weren't included... so I had to buy them again. What do batteries run on?

  • Sometimes when I blackout I wish I had a camera on me so I can watch it the next day. Pretty sure I would want to turn it off after 30 seconds of awkwardness, so no I would not want this ability.

  • I don't even want total recall of this thread.

  • No, definitely not. Most things are better not remembered, which is why you don't remember them.

Not entirely so. We all have hundreds of good things happen to us (birthdays as a kid, great vacations, good times in college, etc) and yet we do not retain total recall of those events. The events with tremendous emotional impact (good or bad) will presumably always stay with you. It seems like it's the other things that fade away and many of those things could have been good.

I am 100% convinced that my wife has this gift, but it is finely tuned to focus on recording the times when I eff up.

I've heard that you tend to remember moments that you psychologically consider "significant' even if the moment doesn't seem particularly significant to you consciously, something about it subconsciously does make the moment stick out.

We all have those traumatic or peaks/valleys that we poignantly remember, and we can probably recall most memories if somebody helps us remember... but those random ones that bear no significance that are no different than the thousands of memories we've more or less forgotten?

So what I'm saying is, maybe your wife IS programmed to remember all your fuck ups! argue

I understand and agree completely. I also strongly suspect that people differ significantly in their focus on "good" versus "bad" events when it comes to recalling significant events.

Put another way, I suspect that the notorious "DE vs SB" divide is based in genetic and environmental influences that likely could be quantified. Perhaps the RCMB crowd could serve as useful subjects to test this hypothesis?
