Reading the article further, the school said that the questions were part of an inter-disciplinary curriculum (social studies and math). It was probably something new they were trying this year and these type of questions were probably only for this week while they were learning about that stuff in social studies class. I'm sure they have not used those kind of questions in math routinely for at least 30 years.

That said the math questions seem almost unbelieveable on their own and the school district/teachers were stupid not to know someone was going to raise a complaint.They should probably just skip the interdiscipline stuff when it comes to more sensitive subjects from history.
