There a bunch of places in Highland Park along Woodward. I always wanted to try one of the places, but chickened out. I know that sounds bad, but I people always warned me about stopping in that area.

Znoe, this is a bad idea imo. I'm pretty adventurous and I love fried shit, but I've never once stopped into one of these joints, and yes I see them. IMO your target audience for something like this with be 98.133% black (repeating, of course). Cool if that's what you're striving for. If not...
You should probably go unique for the area, and unique to what you know, that THEY may not know. This probably puts you at: Detroit-style pizza, coneys, Greek food, Arabic food. Seeing as you are neither Greek nor Arabic and they likely have people of both of those persuasions in Dallas, that pretty much limits you to coneys and Detroit-style pizza.
This is probably over-simplification but quite honestly, who is going to buy bbq from a dude from Detroit in Dallas? Who is going to buy Mexican food in Dallas from a black guy from Detroit? You gotta hone in on your (perceived) expertise. My .02 anyway. Good luck.
