You use your elbows to create space

That is the way basketball has been taught since the beginning of time. As a coach, I am really struggling to see what you are supposed to teach with this. Get a rebound, be strong with the ball, if you get someone they will think twice about getting in your grill again. Refs don't do a good job of keeping people off from you after you grab a rebound, so you have to do it yourself. If someone takes a head shot so be it.
Not liking where basketball and football are going, with this emphasis on protecting the head.

its a bad rule, but it is what it is. whevever the elbow hits the head, the book say it has to be called.
the refs here had no choice but to follow the rule and call the foul.
sad, that this has already come up so much in games this season - obviously will continue to be a sore spot in close games the rest of the year and into the tournament.

If a defensive player initiates contact it needs to be an auto foul or else this is just way uneven. Considering coaches have taught what this rule is punishing for 70 years

This - can't blame the officials for calling it as the rule is written and intended. It is frustrating because I dislike the rule. We just have to hope for consistency throughout the season.

I like that they are protecting little guys from swinging elbows that are swung on purpose. I HATE that they took it a huge step further to this abortion of a rule. Literally, whay are you supposed to do if you grab a rebound at the highest point? Or if a guy steps right up into your chest?

Agreed. It's actually going to create an uglier style of basketball and I hate the fact that there's no apparently no discretion on it.

but Refs rarely if ever call this, player grabs the board and they let him just be rode and harassed with no whistle

Lots of other ways to create space besides throwing elbows... e.g. pivot.
The line between throwing elbows maliciously vs. simply clearing space is too difficult to gauge, this it's a good rule.
Finally, OP saying it's good because it makes the defender think twice, you can still do that, you just pay with a few FTs.

Or if a big guy gets a rebound over his head, stick your chin in. He knows not to bring it down or try to dribble. And now he can't swing his arms either....
