You use your elbows to create space

  • Time to find a guy with a good chin to trap people and just stick his face in there. probably average two Flagrant 1s per game

Or if a big guy gets a rebound over his head, stick your chin in. He knows not to bring it down or try to dribble. And now he can't swing his arms either....

Yep from that position the offensive player now can't do shit.

Lots of other ways to create space besides throwing elbows... e.g. pivot.

The line between throwing elbows maliciously vs. simply clearing space is too difficult to gauge, this it's a good rule.

Finally, OP saying it's good because it makes the defender think twice, you can still do that, you just pay with a few FTs.

hard to pivot when they are literally in your grill and your arms are still up in the air after coming down with the ball. Almost telling you to bring the ball down so little guys like Craft can hack away at it with no fear of a foul.

Again, with a rule like this you might as well play half court basketball because transition will be eliminated by crowding the guy who comes down with the board.

  • How about if you don't want to get hit in the face with an elbow, get your face out of there? I absolutely HATE the new emphasis on that rule. We've become a nation of pussies.

On a related note, how many weeks is Trice going to be out for taking a shot to the head? Goddamn are kids soft these days.

The shots of him sitting on the bench today, he still looked like he was in la-la land.

  • Pussification of basketball. I was REALLY wishing that Nix would just unleash an elbow at full force on some pussy fucking Bronco and blow them into early onset dementia

  • Any rule that takes the goddamn refs 10 fucking minutes watching video replays to make a fucking call is bullshit. College basketball is ruined by the constant interjection of whistles on calls that more often than not should just be called "play on".

That is the way basketball has been taught since the beginning of time. As a coach, I am really struggling to see what you are supposed to teach with this. Get a rebound, be strong with the ball, if you get someone they will think twice about getting in your grill again. Refs don't do a good job of keeping people off from you after you grab a rebound, so you have to do it yourself. If someone takes a head shot so be it.

Not liking where basketball and football are going, with this emphasis on protecting the head.

Totally agree. If you have played the game clearing space with your elbows is like breathing. Not sure how you stop doing it. What they are calling now isn't near flagrant.

The refs don't even make the call unless that sorry-ass coach is petitioning for it.

Hey Boise, welcome to the club of schools we own in both football and basketball and wear the rather garish combination of blue and orange. Florida and Illinois are waiting for you in the lobby.

  • So...let me get this straight. Basically the NCAA is tying the offensive player's hand behind his back. A player with the ball has to keep the ball below his shoulders even if opposing players are hacking at the ball? I'm sure the refs will start calling more fouls on the defensive players going after the ball (sarcasm). More fouls and more turnovers.

    Great..

its a bad rule, but it is what it is. whevever the elbow hits the head, the book say it has to be called.

the refs here had no choice but to follow the rule and call the foul.

sad, that this has already come up so much in games this season - obviously will continue to be a sore spot in close games the rest of the year and into the tournament.

I think it needs to be a discression foul. Not that I trust the refs all that much. Now, it is a mandatory sentence.

Seriously, hold a basketball above your head and then try to bring it down to your waist without your elbows coming out. How do you coach that with a clear consciense.

  • Honestly - what was Nix to do in that situation? Keep the ball up without rotating and one player would grab it for the tie up. Pull the ball down in that situation (which these guys have been taught not to do since they started playing) and the other guy could have tied it up. Horrible rule.

and you pivot with your elbows out

Throwing elbows is a desperation move after you got trapped because you were too slow to outlet or pass the ball. Just rip the ball through and you can do it without elevating your elbows.

Big guys should keep the ball up so the little guys can't get it so that's a nonissue.

Deciding on that line is why we have refs in the first place. What's the line between playing tough defense and hacking a guy? What's the line between a charge and a blocking foul? The rules say particular things, but things are up for interpretation.

We have replays. Last season, every single elbow was reviewed. I saw some that looked malicious, and the refs came back and gave the guy a flagrant, and some that were incidental, like a guy going up for a rebound and turning around into a guy - no foul called. Why is that not enough? Your saying "welp, tough luck" to guys who make incidental contact?

    Royal

  • This rule is not well thought out and will result in more flopping and wild head bobs anytime an elbow or arm is within even a foot of their neck or head. I get trying to get intentional head shots out of the game but being able to clear some defensive space should also be part of the game. You are going to see so many video reviews of elbows it is going to be pathetic and anytime a guy is near a rebounding player you're going to see way more turnovers or fouls because the rebounding player better get rid of the ball quick of he'll be in trouble. Big guys have always been taught don't bring the ball down. Now they can't clear space either when guys reach in or crowd them. What are they suppose to do? Get rid of the ball in a millisecond? Call a timeout? This rule while well intended is terrible.

If a defensive player initiates contact it needs to be an auto foul or else this is just way uneven. Considering coaches have taught what this rule is punishing for 70 years

....or, even better, much like a punt returner, put a rule in requiring a 1 yard halo around a rebounder and if contact is made before he is allowed to pass or dribble, it is an automatic foul. How can you raise your arms above your head to protect the ball without your elbows moving outward? I can see Wiscy practices now....learning how to aim their heads at elbows....the way it is, I think I would do this as well. Stupid rule....if it is flagrant and intentional, no problem; if it is because the defender is too close, shouldn't be called.

On the Nix play, he first got slapped in the face, before getting fouled, and then the elbows came up. Why not make a slap to the face a foul? Oh, it is and the incompetent officials missed it. The pick that hurt Harris' shoulder was clearly a moving pick...and BSU did that all night...bumping cutters, with few calls. Thought that was a foul also....maybe all bumps should be made techinical flagrant 1s.
