I grew up a block away and worked at the hardware. I think Norm's drinks (that may or may not have been served to me underage) are solely responsible for the hair on my chest.

That explains the stray follicle I regularly find on my microwave special. Say Hey to Craig next time you are in the hardware.

Other than that, there isn't anything special since I hit the road after high school.

Bullfrogs is more of a Clarkston thing than an Ortonville thing, IMHO.

As for the Boat Bar, I haven't been in that dive since about 1990. I assume it hasn't changed much.

Really? I would say Bullfrogs is closer to Ortonville than Clarkston, but it has been a long time since I have been up there.

FWIW, --- and off topic --- the wife and I go to Dusty's a lot (well, we used to), we love the service and the wine offerings, but the menu has gotten bland and frankly, the chef really out thinks himself on certain dishes by combining food items that do not go well (or present well) together. We're over it. I travel far too much and eat out at much more deserving $30+ per plate price restaurants than Dusty's. IMHO, Copper is a little bit better and much cheaper.

I haven't hit up Gracie's in Williamston yet, I heard that is very good. I met the chef from there at the Meridian Farmer Market last Saturday, he was excellent.

I really miss Villegas. He did a GREAT job there. He used to integrate local food with tremendous presentation and offerings.

Eh, I haven't been in my old stomping grounds in several years. After consulting the google map, you're definitely right. For some reason I was thinking it was in Independence Twp, and there it is just by Lake Louise.

In Novi: Toasted Oak Grill and Market is pretty superb. I've only been there once, and it's pricey, but it was delish. I'm also a fan of Cherry Blossom Japanese Restaurant. Pretty much everything else here is a chain.

Not from Novi, but Toasted Oak is good. I haven't been to NoVI chophouse since they moved, but the old one was better than Toasted Oak IMHO.

Volare is excellent (but down the road in Wixom)...

    I second the Toasted Oak.

For the rep Novi gets as a chain restaurant mecca, it's also a big enough town to have a handful of great local experiences to go with it. Top Novi places:

    1.) Toasted Oak
    2.) Steve and Rocky's
    3.) Chop House No. VI
4.) Shiro (resides in an antebellum-style mansion, serving sushi and asian-fusion; cool venue and good food)
5.) Guernsey's (only for the ice cream, but you'll walk out completely satisfied on that alone)

Although I grew up in Novi, I'm also going to give a shout out to downtown Northville's "Table Five". If you are ever in the area, go there. Just went last night and their sea scallops are amazing. It's right on Main St., has a fantastic menu of entrees and apps, does al fresco dining (if you care about that) and has a surprising selection of local beers on tap to boot.

    Old Standby: Big Rock

I would agree with Forest Grill, but IMHO Tallulah shouldn't be on the list. Initially great, but not very good the next few visits. Big Rock is excellent and has a nice happy hour, but I'd rather go to Cameron's.

Forest Grill is excellent, and has exotic charcuterie. Great for foodies.

I would highly recommend Cafe Via as an additional restaurant in Birmingham. (and Cameron's if you want a chain). Nice outdoor dining for summer nights.

I've heard a lot of people knock Tallulah, but I've enjoyed it every time.

Cameron's is "nicer" than Big Rock, but Big Rock has so much more character. It's a great place with good food and good people, it used to be the old train station. The owner of Big Rock lives locally and is active in the community, while the owner of Cameron's is Ruth's Chris.

I do also like Cafe Via, could've added that to the list as well. Check out Townhouse if you haven't been there, they have good food and a great outdoor dining area in the summer.

how is the $19 burger at Townhouse?

(I would also add Toast for breakfast)

I agree about the Big Rock. I like both Cameron's and Big Rock equally. Both great places, but if you want to go local, I agree with you, I'd go to Big Rock.

Cafe Via pours a NICE drink.

Have not had the $19 burger...I'll make a point to try it this summer. Toast is great for brunch on Sundays. Cafe Via and that drink sounds good about RIGHT NOW.

This is true, but OP wanted home town joints. I'm not from Kinde, but I do love me some Pasta House. Joe's in Pt. Austin is where we always went when we visited my grandparents. So many delicious memories.
