Zack Follett describes what an NFL concussion feels like

  • ”It’s just like getting a big rush to your head, you’re dizzy, you kind of don’t know where you are, and you just, you feel whoozy, but you also feel kind of happy,” Follett said. “People take it different ways. I know people will start crying, they just can’t control their crying. Their eyes just start pouring out tears.”

  • Good read. I had no idea he walked away from the game... Talk about the road less travelled

    I'm sure Follett's retirement wasn't entirely voluntary....

    He wasn't exactly a starter.

    1. He DID start his last year in the league.
    2. He was a special teams monster that the lions could have used last year.
    3. He was told by doctors to retire because he damn near never walked again after his last injury

Not sure where you're coming from on this -- he started a couple of games in 2010 before suffering a serious neck injury (including temporary paralysis) and going on IR.

The Lions then signed Stephen Tulloch and Justin Durant the next year to start next to DeAndre Levy, and no, Follet wouldn't have started over them. He fought to work his way back to playing in 2011, but suffered a stinger in training camp before the season started, and had a sit-down with Jim Schwartz. As a result of that, Zack announced he was "no longer a Lion," and the Lions released him 12 hours later.

He was an important piece on special teams, as Danny Amendola could tell you (if he remembered). The Lions had to go out and sign Isaiah Ekejiuba and Bobby Carpenter to replace him.

He was no Dick Butkus, but Follett was a good player, and the kind of nut job that every team needs on special teams. Health permitting, he would unquestionably still be playing. The Lions were lucky to pick up his heir apparent in Ronnell Lewis.
