Zeigler out at CMU

  • Wake up folks. Trey's dad was a well respected assistant before coming to CMU. Trey is leaving CMU and while dad might not get an HC job there are going to be numerous assistant jobs available including at least 6 in The Big Ten plus any Big Ten assistants who leave we don't know about right now.

If Trey wants to play in a major basketball conference like Big Ten, Big East, ACC, SEC, Big 12 or even the PAC 12 there are coaches who will work like crazy to employ his well qualified father as an assistant for the year Trey is sitting out to get Trey in school and one the court for them in the '13-'14 season.

Ernie is from Detroit and that's not going to hurt him either.

  • Would love to have him, not sure how well he'd fit though. Would be hard to adjust from 30+ mins and 15+ shots a game to role player. I'll let Izzo be the judge on this one.

He and McCallum together would be interesting.

  • If you've seen Trey play in person you might not want him at MSU. Yes, his role would be different, but I'd be a little more open to him becoming a Spartan if he ever hustled, played defense, or basically looked like he gave a shit at any point. Also, check out those FT numbers.

As for Big Z, during his time at CMU he never had a player play out his 4 years. Wow.

  • I am not a fan of having kids play for their fathers even if he is talented. Last thing I want is the coach (Ziegler's father) to show favoritism to his son when we have other talented players on our team. Kentucky fans till this day hate Tubby for letting Saul Smith play.

Saul isn't the only reason UK fans hate Tubby.

Yet Kansas fans have never regretted Larry Brown hiring Danny Manning's father as an assistant.

Why would you think that? Trey Zeigler has to wait a year. MSU could make a run, see an assistant take an HC job and Izzo could have spots for father and son too. Highly unlikely but Trey Zeigler to aa is just as much of a reach. Beilein isn't dumping staff and Trey Zeigler seems to be very attached to dad.

Zeigler Sr. was on the staff at Pittsburgh with Jaime Dixon when they were both Howland assistants and Zeigler went with Howland to UCLA before taking the HC job at CMU.

It still might be a package deal. CMU did him a favor pulling the plug now so he can go to the world's largest unofficial job fair for coaches at the Final Four in New Orleans. Zeigler can become an assistant at a place like Nebraska or Illinois for a pay cut and still be making 6 figures and know the new coaching staff will be given enough time for his son to sit out a year and still be there to see him play.

A year ago I would have said they were off to UCLA but given that situation Ben Howland might be gone after next year. The Zeigler's could end up back at Pittbughs for all we know.

Why WOULD you think that? Totally unfounded regarding MSU and your scenerio....

UM, Green Bay and Chicago teams all have one thing in common: They all suck

  • In other Trey/Twitter related news, it looks like it's OK for the coach to buy you a car when you're his kid.

  • The good thing about coaching your son is that you can slap the shit out of him when he screws up.

That place has been a revolving door for years now.

Very true, the team that beat us at the Spartan Classic in Izzo's 1st year could barely field a team by season's end.

I was just going to post this. Watching him play at CMU, I always said "Man, Izzo would have had a hell of a time with him."

I don't know if I've ever seen the kid run. I've seen a jog and that's about it. Horrible free throw shooter, and he doesn't seem to get into the games unless he can be the hero.

He's a good player and I wouldn't be opposed, but I'm not going to worry and would rather have a new 4 year players instead.

Perhaps he was like that because he knew his dad would never sub him out/bench him...he knew he could get away with things with his dad as a coach

Entirely possible. But you would think a guy like him, if you're going to play in the MAC, you'd want to dominate, especially if you have dreams of playing in the league.

    Reading is fundamental.

What part of highly unlikely don't you understand. Like highly unlikely as much as Zeigler being an automatic to aa.

Maybe you READ FIRST next time.

Thought you would be happier since Tri-Unity Christian got beat by Middleton-Fulton

Well, no, it is because he only won one NC and obviously wasn't trying hard enough for a second because he didn't cheat. Cheating, after all, is the Kentucky way - it's not a coincidence Calipari is beloved by the fan base without an NC while Tubby was despised despite winning one.

He has been benched by his dad. It could more of a "I don't want to be here, never really did want to be here" thing.

For some reason I remember Kampe being good friends with his dad (though I'm not sure if it's only on a professional level).

Gutsy move to fire him now. Trey would seem to be gone.

I recall the signing day bits over the last few years where a few others said they came to CMU to play with him.

Could lose a decent portion of the team.

Apparently freshman guard, Austin McBroom, just announced his planned departure from the program via his Mytweetbook page.

If anybody is good at basketball here, and has eligibility left, get to MP now.

What do you have against Stevens?

CMU basketball is a tough sell. Middle of nowhere, 5500 seat gym. The last good team happened because Jay Smith started recruiting Chris Kaman when he was 6'6" , Kaman showed up and he was 7 feet. plus Smith got some solid supporting players.

Smith is now a Uof D assistant.

  • 2 great recruits from Michigan chose to play for their dads. 1 worked out pretty well. 1 not so much.
