audiophiles: Build me a stereo system from components

  • I've been tossing around the idea of purchasing components and building a solid stereo system for some time... Here's what I want, in a nutshell, and keep in mind that I'd prefer to purchase the components over the course of time, not necessarily right away:

    1) receiver - I really want to get a good receiver that'll last for 20 years. I don't mind paying a little extra but nothing insanely high priced. Just a solid, basic receiver, the most bang for my buck.

    2) speakers - I see these speaker sets at places like Costco and Best Buy all the time. Like the receiver, I want some quality speakers that'll last forever. They don't need to be powerful enough to shake the house because I'll be setting up a medium sized room, the most important thing is clarity. If one of the musicians farted during the recording I want to hear it.

    3) iPod dock - Nothing fancy, just the basics.

    4) record player - Great quality. I want to be able to purchase old records and hear everything. This component is critical.

    5) anything else I need?

  • 5) Blu-ray player a must!!

For a med size room a receiver with 800 watts should do the trick, HDMI connections (more the better), WIFI and/or internet connection. Denon makes solid receiver, can’t go wrong. Some complain about setting it up.

Speakers, will that will depend on your preferred choice. Just don’t be a BOSE speaker groupie, and spend all that money for them.

"Audiophiles" don't use receivers. They use amplifiers and w/ separate pre-amps.
Prima Luna tube gear w/ Vienna Acoustics speakers (Baby Grand model) is an "audiophile" set-up that will give you happy listening for many years.

  • Not sure if you're looking for just music or if you want a home theater setup. Assuming you are just looking for music, I'd recommend the following:

DTA-1 amp 15 watts per channel
    Dayton B652 bookshelf speakers
    Dayton 10" powered sub

    www.parts-express.com

For around $200, you'll have a solid 2.1 system that will sound great. You can plug an iPod dock into it, and a turntable (you'll need a phono pre-amp for the turntable and a splitter, since the DTA1 only has 1 3.5mm input).

Thanks.... Yeah I'm not interested in a home theatre

  • What's your budget? As said above, when you say audiophile, I think separate amplifier, preamp and tuner if needed. High end CD player, turntable and speakers. You can easily spend $20K on this type of setup.

For a more basic system with a receiver, decent speakers and iPod dock you can get this for a small fraction of that price. I'm not up on today's more basic systems but I'd guess that Scottsdale has some high end hi-fi stores that can help at both price ranges. Stay away from Best Buy and box stores if you want decent sound.

  • I've always been a huge fan of Adcom. I wouldn't go with a receiver, I would go to ebay and pick up something like a GFA-545 and GTP-500. You would have a hard time finding a receiver that could sound as good. Here's a pair with a buy-it-now of $300.

I was hoping to just build a system slowly but definitely not 20k type system, maybe $3500 when it's compete. But no cd player just iPod and records

Instead of a dock have you (or anyone) considered a bluetooth receiver?

I can plug anything into my stereo and listen to it, but my problem is I want to be able to control it from anywhere (within reason). I've been thinking of trying one of these out, I'm just skeptical on sound quality and range.

Receiver - Integra, Pioneer Elite, or Onkyo Pro

    Speakers - Parasound Studio Series

iPod Dock - just buy one from apple unless you want to defeat the internal DAC, then buy a Wadia

4 - record players... i know nothing about

    5 - Blu ray player - Oppo BD 93

  • Did the same thing in 1998 - did a lot of searching and price/quality research - granted, that was quite a few years ago, but my system has really held up well and I don't see having to replace anything soon. I went mainly with Harmon/Kardon components. Harmon/Kardon avr 20 II receiver (love it).

He says he wants "audiophiles" to build him a system but then talks about speaker sets at costco. This discussion is meaningless until he gives us a budget to work with.

I didn't realize it was ghost. Now that I know it is, I don't believe that he's really in the market for a system.
