cnnsi.com has the Cousins pick as a cover story

I feel bad for KC. How is he going to get the reps to learn the position when RG3 will be given a cram course by everyone on the team? They need RG4 to succeed NOW. They already have a backup in case RG3 gets rung out. Kirk will be ghost. Awful spot for him.

Thing is KC will sit and learn. You know he has the work ethic, he has the smarts to digest the playback, and there is nothing wrong to not have to be " the guy". Face it DC has shirts and welcome billboards already. Rgiii is going to have a ton of pressure on him. I think the three years Aaron Rodgers sat in green bay did wonders. I'm not trying to compare KC and Rodgers but I am saying sitting and watching sometimes is a good thing.

The more I look at it, "this".

I'm guessing that Washington picked KC as a security blanket (but a rookie security blanket puzzles me). KC is in a tough situation politically. If RGIII isn't panning out, the owner will still want to play him. And, I think the fan base will be split.

It's almost like the ownership got to pick the first 3 rounds, and the head coach got to pick the rest.

I have every confidence KC will wring everything he can out of the situation, but the Redskins have to put everything they can into making RG3 a success. RG3 is the opening day starter--he gets every crumb on the dinner table.

KC would have been much better off--like Hoyer--behind an established starter who can show him the ropes without worrying about losing his job.

True that. Sometimes it's better to learn from brilliance rather than learning from the starters fuck ups. KC will make the best of it. Jesus, the redskins trip over their dick alot lately.

You mean, since Snyder bought the franchise?

This is how you know it was a dumb pick.

nice counter point, that was an easy debate victory.

  • There is no way that this was a smart move for the Redskins unless they plan to trade one of these guys...two rookie QB's makes no sense...this is worse than Stanton on the Lions chemistry wise...

Chemistry-wise? Their chemistry will be better than ever, RGIII and the Cap'n are two of the more charismatic players in the entire draft.

I'm wondering if they have a concern that isn't yet known to the public. Maybe a health issue or something was discovered at the combine (or even perhaps afterward?), so Cap'n Kirk is there just in case. Additionally, in 2 of RGIII's 4 seasons at Baylor he missed at least 1 game from injury. This could potentially be the exact reason they wanted Cousins; so that they could have an effective backup QB come in for those few games per year that they might think RGIII is prone to be missing.

For the record, RGIII is basically the only reason why Washington isn't a phenomenal fit for KC. A west coast offense (as Shanahan runs) is one that is very suitable to Cousins' skill set. The other thing that Shanahan is known for? Interior OL strength, which should reduce how often Cousins has to deal with his kryptonite: the interior pass rush.

First the idea of two rookies who both need playing time to learn how to play is one issue.

The second is that no matter how publicly supportive of each other they are, they are competing for the same starting job.

Third is that neither has anything to tteach the other since neither has any NFL playing time.

Fourth is it splits the team between the two as to which one everyone wants to play with...

Just a bad idea...much better to have a rookie starter and a veteran backup...

I think it makes sense in taking him. This is the best guy to take to let RG3 develop without someone other than Kirk looking over RG3's shoulder and wanting RG3 to fail.

In other words, Kirk will be the backup, they both get along and know each other and will support each other. Kirk is smart and head of RG3 in progressions so he will help him develop and Cousins is the ultimate team guy.

They have already cut John Beck, and Rex Grossman is not going to help anyone on or off the field and he would have wanted to start.

If RG3 does goes down with an injury, Kirk steps in.

So in all aspects it is smart pick.

I do believe RGIII's parents were in the military and he is very well grounded. Time will tell if he is a NFL QB.

    Ron_in_ATL

  • Horrible situation for Cousins. No matter how well he plays in practice, no matter how good he looks in preseason games, even if he outperforms RG3 in practice and games, he'll be made the #3 QB as Washington will do everything they can to avoid any QB controversy (at least for the first year).

    Spartan Punk

  • Peter King on the Cousins pick:

"Worst pick, offense: Kirk Cousins, QB, Michigan State, 102nd overall to Washington. Allow me to jump on a crowded bandwagon. The only reason to do this, and I mean only, is because you're injury-protecting Robert Griffin III. All the other reasons aren't legitimate. Cousins' trade value won't increase as a No. 3 quarterback behind Griffin and Rex Grossman; ask Bill Belichick about Ryan Mallett. And what I really hate about the pick is that the Redskins won't have a first-round pick in 2013 or in 2014. GM Bruce Allen should have tried to peddle this pick for a third-rounder in 2013 somewhere, and if he couldn't find one, he should have buttressed a need position and taken second-round-tackle and value pick Bobby Massie here."

  • Cousins will eventually beat out RG3, and RG3 will be moved to WR.

Good article on why the redskins are morons.

I buy the "other needs" argument, but not the "doubt in Griffin's mind about his status" idea. Telling a rookie he's going to be the guy and there isn't any competition doesn't seem like a good idea to me, and certainly isn't what MD and crew do.

Then Kirk will get a stupid haircut and walk around with an entourage. He will be known as K-Cuz.
