dNews at it again... pushing a Jake Boss for scuM job...

  • I guess Maloney has been fired by pizza boy.

So now the News puts out this article. If he was an assistant at MSU thats one thing, but to say the Head Coach of an MSU sport is going to go to scuM or is a candidate??? Maybe back in the 30's but now?

What lazy rag w an agenda.
    Edit: fixed!

Wasn't he an assistant for them just a couple years ago? If Brandon is actually willing to give him a big contract, I wouldn't be surprised to see him jump ship.

3 years total at SCum. 1 year as coach & 7 as assistant at EMU...hence the house in Ypsi, but of course the Blue Wall implies it's because he loves SCum. [eyeroll]

Here's a little something from his MSU bio:
"...Most importantly, he wants to be a Spartan."
"...A Lansing native...where he now directs the one program he has wanted to coach his entire career."

Maybe the WVU baseball coach is available. shrug

He was an asst there to Maloney and now we know why they won big back then. Jake Boss Jr.

Funny thing when I read the headline I thought they were talking about our HC's dad.

Not sure what kind of cash they would pay, but just that the news would bring this up first thing. As if all Big Ten or even MSU coaches dream for the day scuM calls them.

Haha yeah why not? Didn't they also snag the women's track coach from wvu?

  • No relation.

I know it is not his son, and I believe there is no relationship at all ('cept as coach of course)

HOWEVER, there is no way in hell that Jake Boss leaves his dream job at MSU to go to um. There may be an outlandishly crazy amount of money that could make it happen. I mean hell, for a few million a year, guaranteed for 10 years, I would probably do it.

But Jake has a great job, his dream job, and he is not exactly going broke. But if this firms up a better contract for him at MSU, then I am all for the foolish talk. Keep it coming.

  • Keep in mind that when Borseth left the women's basketball program under duress the Freep and Dnews had PSU's coach penciled in for the job. Then they acted shocked that some other high level coaches turned them down and they ended up hiring the St. Johns coach.

If Hollis hadn't have come through with the completion on McLane Stadium I would be very concerned. However Bos has recruited very well and he has a real stadium and real facilities.

A headline like that is a function of lazy reporting and lazier editors.

  • Well, it was just a matter of time until Maloney got canned. He has done a pretty horrendous job over the past few years.

Regardless of whether UM takes a run at him or not, I hope Hollis locks up Boss for a long time. A very, very large percentage of MSU baseball's success is exclusively thanks to him. I could absolutely see UM pooling some cash together to try to steal Boss away from EL.

Though we are a couple of years removed from the glory days of both programs, keep in mind that, for those outside of the midwest, there was a long-time perception that the only two high-profile northern baseball jobs were UM and ND. Also, though it's not, keep in mind that UM does try to run its baseball program like a revenue sport.

Short of buying Doc Brown's DeLorean, I'm sure Brandon's going to throw some money at getting UM baseball to return to its former glory. It's going to be a hell of a rebuilding project, though.

  • Boss has zero ties to MSU. His father was a Lansing Everett guy, SCum offers more money, and a bigger budget, Why wouldn't he?

Yeah, I was wondering why the MSU student newspaper suggest that he could be the coach at UM

Hate to say it but it makes sense to me. They were discussing it earlier today and sounds like UM coach makes in the 400-450k range and from what was said on the radio that's over 2x what Coach makes now.

Tough turning down doubling your pay for a 75 minute commute or move..... Coach doesn't have any true MSU ties and UM knows how well he coaches and recruits... Pretty easy to see why UM would want him with his Michigan connections. UM itself can help him recruit nationally.

Anyway, let's hope there is no life to it but with his previous history at UM, extra money and how well he coaches it's a possibility.

Budget and money. You some sort of tard?

Must be, because I have seen multiple people turn down more money to stay at MSU or anywhere else for that matter. There are thousands of examples of coaches trading up until they reach a major conference or an elite job. But, UofM baseball isn't elite and Boss seems extremely happy in the same conference. We aren't talking about Boss moving to an SEC school.

Why would he just jump ship to UofM? How much money are we talking here? Hundreds of thousands? Tens? If you think he has "no connection to MSU" then he must have "no connection to UofM" as he has spent more time at MSU than UofM. You don't normally see coaches jumping to their rival. I don't see it. Even if this was schools such as UCLA and USC. I don't see it.

Maloney was making $350,000 per year prior to getting canned.

Boss will make $98,000 this year.

  • Bos has got to get through the weekend, hopefully get an NCAA bid and after the team is finished Hollis speaks to Bos, possibly speaks to his agent beforehand.

Bos spent more time at EMU than in aa.

umaa got too happy with Maloney after one great year and overpaid him.

Brandon isn't paying his new basketball coach as much as they were paying Borseth and its very possible he won't be offering the new coach the same kind of money they were paying Maloney.

He has to go through the options. Is this as good as it gets at MSU? I know MSU has neglected the baseball program in the past. I have alot of respect for the Boss family. My father played for Sr at Everett and remain close. I was coached as a catcher by Sr. I'm sure he will stay but, I haven't heard anything yet. I was just stating the fact that SCum would have better resources to compete nationally. No doubt in my mind Boss is the best coach in the Big Ten. Will MSU fight to keep him? We shall see.

Maybe its time for Hollis to revisit Jake's contract and get him in to the top 4 of the B1G. Not necessarily the top because MSU doesn't have OSU or umaa revenue.
