not sure on the smart cover, but you can't beat the drop protection of the otter box impact series...that is what I have and it has survived every drop.

Correction...otter box defender on the ipad, impact series is on my iphone.

When you open the smart cover, the iPad wakes up. When you close it, it goes to sleep. Are the leather ones worth the money? No, but it's a cool thing to have. It also folds back nicely to create a stand for the plane or on a counter.

Don't get an otter box unless your child is going to be throwing the thing around. They are obnoxiously big & undesirable to hold.

I recommend a screen protector for the back of it (back can scratch) & a smart cover. If you're going to travel a lot with it, get a traveling case. Find them on ebay/amazon pretty cheap.

I don't like my smart cover because it pops off kinda easy and will put it in sleep but when i pick it up if it moves even a little it unsleeps.

Also its not magnetic enough to stick to the back so it hangs all the time since I hold it with my left hand since I'm a lefty.

I bought two piece o'shit samsung galaxies to use as my cover...just tape those pieces of shit right on my ipad...

I actually bought the smart cover and returned it the next day to get the one I posted above. As wonderful a device as the iPad is, the smart cover is a POS.

This. I have one too (gray). Looks cool. Is a piece of crap. Haven't had time to take it back.

Edges are sharp, doesn't prop up in really helpful positions. Sometimes doesn't close all the way. Magnetic strips are a bit weak.

As a big Android guy, I still find this fucking hilarious
