recently moved back to michigan, transferred within my current company to the new office, same job status level, same responsibilities. love the company, and actually love what i do, but always looking to move up in the corporate ladder. slowly starting to realize there is little upward mobility in this office, and while i came into this office keeping my good salary, they will give me crappy raises to even it out and keep it equal with the others at my level. While my previous office encouraged and rewarded an individual trying to get ahead, this one seems to discourage it and maintain status quo.
bummer man
end rant. i know, cool story bro

look at this way. you got out of chicago alive before being shot. your taxes are lower. your cost of living is lower. people are nicer in michigan (IMHO). you are closer to EL, right? they brew better beer in MI. in the summer it stays light out until nearly 10pm, while the latest it stays light in the summer in chicago is 8:30. that means you can play 18 holes after work, oh and the golf courses are way better and cheaper than chicago.
any of this helping? if you are making the same or slightly better money, you got it made in the shade

That's what happens when you return to a place no one ever leaves.
Have a relative in medical device sales who was previously in pharmaceutical sales. In both cases the reps covering the Lake MI side of the state (TC, GR, Kzoo, St Joe) never left. A few became regional managers and they never left either. Same goes for other healthcare related jobs. You start in places like Chicago or Boston for what a person with 10 years experience gets in West MI because no one wants to leave.
