That's what happens when you return to a place no one ever leaves.
Have a relative in medical device sales who was previously in pharmaceutical sales. In both cases the reps covering the Lake MI side of the state (TC, GR, Kzoo, St Joe) never left. A few became regional managers and they never left either. Same goes for other healthcare related jobs. You start in places like Chicago or Boston for what a person with 10 years experience gets in West MI because no one wants to leave.

look at this way. you got out of chicago alive before being shot. your taxes are lower. your cost of living is lower. people are nicer in michigan (IMHO). you are closer to EL, right? they brew better beer in MI. in the summer it stays light out until nearly 10pm, while the latest it stays light in the summer in chicago is 8:30. that means you can play 18 holes after work, oh and the golf courses are way better and cheaper than chicago.
any of this helping? if you are making the same or slightly better money, you got it made in the shade

And while I see chitown doing his Chicago is superior than all thing, Chicago was fun to live in. Impossible to buy a good size house with a yard, especially if you don't want to live in Naperville or Elgin, but fun until you have kids and don't want them to go to cps.
I guess it's just a grass is always greener thing

I think his larger point is that people who are able to make a good income (like pharma reps and medical supply reps) aren't leaving, even if a promotion is available in another market. If you compare what house you can purchase in West Michigan for $300k, and then factor in that these jobs tend to pay well enough that you have money left over for a boat, ski trips, and perhaps a condo in Florida, the quality of life is superior to simply moving to a large market and seeing all your money going towards housing costs.

I'm sure there's data out there to show who is leaving the state and who isn't. The migration by education level at the link below seem to indicate that Michigan does a decent job of keeping educated people at home, but doesn't lure any educated people to the state from elsewhere.

Well that explains why so many people here hang on to MSU sports and arguing online for their enjoyment/despair in life...
You guys are on here all day at work just getting through the day to bring home some money and live for what?I may be an overly optimistic grad student, but damn I hope I don't live a slave to my job. If I don't like it I hope I feel enough freedom to move anywhere around the world to find something better...

recently moved back to michigan, transferred within my current company to the new office, same job status level, same responsibilities. love the company, and actually love what i do, but always looking to move up in the corporate ladder. slowly starting to realize there is little upward mobility in this office, and while i came into this office keeping my good salary, they will give me crappy raises to even it out and keep it equal with the others at my level. While my previous office encouraged and rewarded an individual trying to get ahead, this one seems to discourage it and maintain status quo.
bummer man
end rant. i know, cool story bro

The key to loving your job(for me at least) is to never allow yourself to be tied down. I work a ridiculous amount of hours, but have total expenses of about $700 per month and bank like crazy. When I get home from work, I relax and do whatever the hell I want to. Once I have enough money to retire within the next 10 years or so, I'll think about having a wife and/or kids, but what keeps me completely sane and happy is the fact that I could say, "Fuck it, I'm not going to do this anymore" at any second and it wouldnt be that big of a deal.
I can't imagine how dumb some of you must be to get married and have kids while still broke. That's a one way ticket to slavery.
