Yes, we finish in the Top 10 the last 5 years but can't go better .500 in your conference.

    blahblahblah

BSUFAN9999- what's your prediction for the score of the Boise - Michigan State game?

Peterson is a liar if he's trying to peddle that bullshit...

I thought so too....until last year's Air Force game. One would think that if your team is in a conference with an academy team that you would find a way to spend a little extra time in the spring or summer working on defending the triple option and handling cut blocks. Air Force was a lose-able game for us last year. One would think that we would make extra special preparations for what could lead to a loss.

Well, the players corroborated after the game that there was no additional preparation done in advance of the week of the game and that Petersen was telling the truth. He focuses on improving fundamental skills and becoming a better football player every day at practice and only introduces game specific tactics the week of the game.

    BSUFAN9999

  • BSUFAN9999 said...

Because that other team is not allowed to prepare for the same amount of time.......what a crock of ****.

You know what is funny and ironic. I have learned that Petersen doesn't do any team specific work until the week of the game. All the extra time is spent on improving fundamental football skills. Nothing related to the opponent starts until the week of the game. Meanwhile, college football fans think every moment is spent in game specific preparation. It simply isn't true.

Maybe we win because of better fundamental skills....like open field tackling, blocking, etc. and a willingness to play disciplined, team football. Starts to makes sense when you think about it....doesn't it?

Hopefully, with the new approach to a playoff if Boise put themselves into position they will have the opportunity to have their fate determined on the field....which is all we really ask.

Yea, Peterson isnt watching ANY MSU game film right now. he's totally focused 100% on tackling dummies and cone drills. he'll worry about schemes and gameplanning probably the saturday before the opener (yea, thats technically a day too early for his strict '1 week schedule', but given the friday night kick, he's taking some liberties with his rules), and then will install it during practice the week before the game. This is Boise's super bowl, for the team and the fans. Its a big game for us because its a somewhat big name at night on a Friday, but in reality, this game falls somewhere behind UM, ND, OSU, Wisky, and NU in terms of importance to us. Stop pretending like Boise prepares for their big openers the exact same way they prepare for Northern Idaho Polytechnical State U.

The new system wouldn't have media/coaches biased opinions in the process of picking the teams. I never figured out why it would be a good idea to let coaches have a say in who is ranked where...

    Fine.

My point was if the kicks go in we would likely have been in the top 4 and qualified for a playoff had it been in place at that time.

We used to take walk-ons that would earn scholarships. Brontzman who actually had a phenomenal career except for a couple of ill-time misses fit that category. He is #1 or #2 in career points scored. But he missed a couple of field goals in the game we lost to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl as well as the Nevada kicks.

We spent a scholarship last year on a kicker, but he redshirted when he apparently didn't beat two walk-ons for the job.

We spent another scholarship on a punter/kicker this year and told him to arrive in the summer ready to compete for the job.

So you would have freshmen competing to kick right now? If so, thats not good since i definitely expect this game to be low scoring, field goals could be huge. Conroy is pretty much automatic for us within 45 yards.

We lost a lot of talented seniors who won more games than any team in the modern era football, but the question of returning starters isn't as black and white as some of you make it out to be. If you go in thinking we lost 18 starters, you will be sorely mistaken.

Since someone is saying we only have 4 returning starters, here are 5 examples off the top of my head for why that statistic doesn't tell the whole story:

Dan Paul was the starting FB in 2010. He had a groin injury for which he missed the 1st part of last season and was then held out as a medical redshirt for the rest of the year. Is he a returning starter or not? He is a beast - 260 lbs and the strongest player on the team. I imagine he will be picking up a double team on Gholston a good part of the night. He is a senior and not inexperienced by any interpretation.

DJ Harper was the starter in 2009 (over Doug Martin) until Harper went down with a torn ACL. Doug Martin who became a 1st round draft pick won the job last year. Harper is a 6th year senior. Harper ran right past the Va Tech defense as a back-up two years ago. You want to call him inexperienced?

Matt Paradis played center for 2/3s of the season last year. Our starting center last year had bad knees and just wasn't' feeling up to playing. He retired at the end of the year and is now a Graduate Assistant in CA. Paradis played the majority of the season at center. Paradis is one of players you don't qualify as returning.

Lee Hightower was called into duty as a true freshman early in the season when Gavis and Taylor (our starting CBs who both return) went down with injuries. Hightower really impressed and started 1/2 of the season and is expected to start at free safety this year.

Jeremy Ioane had to fill in as starter in the 1st 3 games (including Georgia) at safety because Cedric Febis was ineligible due to some benefits Febis received from his host family with whom he stayed when he was in high school. Ioane is expected to start at strong safety but is not a returning starter per the definition

Last year, White, Brown and Simmons split snaps pretty evenly at nickel backer. White graduated. Brown and Simmons return with more than 1/2 the snaps.

Virtually every player on the travel roster has a specific role for which he will see the field. Petersen excels at assessing players and find a way to use his individual skills to our team's advantage. It comes from having to do more with less early in his career when he didn't have the same quality of players. The players back then were more one dimensional and Petersen had to manage the chess board to put his one dimensional players in the situations in which he wanted them.

We platooned everyone except Kellen Moore last year. Overall, the younger guys have had a lot of snaps and have showed great promise.

    Where do we have questions?

QB where we don't know which one yet but we are choosing between a California 1st team red shirt senior and a Elite 11 Florida 8A player of the year.

Kicker where we just can't find consistency

DE where we will be counting on some newcomers to make key contributions

Safety where we will be talented but young.

Otherwise, we feel pretty good about our team.

that's awesome for you to have guys that played before.

We return 9 of 11 starters on a top 5 D in the country, and everyone in the 2 deeps behind them. Our OL loses one starter to be filled by a guy who started last year because of injury, so our OL is 100%. We have arguably the best RB in the conference, easily #2 in Leveon Bell - a 240 lb bruiser who is basically unstoppable. We have the best TE in the conference. we have a 4th year Jr. who has sat behind and learned from the best QB in MSU history. our only real question mark is at WR, where we have a ton of talent but its very young (including the #1 guy in the MW from the last two years).

In other words, we don't have to come up with semantic definitions of "starter" to explain our depth and experience. Your little run is over this year and the forecast for 8/31 in East Lansing is PAIN.

1.) If you're relying on a fullback to block Too Tall Gholston, you're in trouble.

2.) Harper hasn't done jack shit in two years. I wouldn't call that inexperienced, but I wouldn't want him starting on my team. Especially not behind a new offensive line against Narduzzi's defense. Boise is going to have to throw the ball to win, and I can't see a new starter at QB doing much damage in a hostile environment against this secondary.

3.) I'm not scared of a bunch of underclassmen defensive backs who looked good against the WAC in three games or at nickle back.

I expect MSU to win. They should be favored with the defense they have returning. It should be awesome. But I wouldn't be shocked if BSU surprised. The wild card is Petersen. I expect him to have a plan.

For example, we have a screen play that can be run 3 different ways (right, left, middle) depending on how the defense reacts. And I imagine there are double moves from there. With the anticipated pressure from your DLine I imagine we will see a lot of screens....that is how teams handled our pressure last year.

Yes, I am coming with my 12 year old son. I ordered my tickets this week and will be sitting in the BSU section....so I am expecting really bad seats. I usually watch my BSU games on TV so this will be new for me.

dear god NO...NOT A DOUBLE MOVE?!?!??! panic

a lot of BCS teams could finish in the top ten every year if they got to play one good team all year and then 10 weeks of Idaho, Wyoming, San Jose State, etc etc.

Boise has done some great things, but spare me the bravado. put the same team in the Big Ten and you become 8-4 just like Iowa or any number of other good BCS teams.

  • BSUFAN - I really don't understand why some posters are acting like jackasses, but I guess that's the nature of tRCMB. I pretty much just have to say I understand both sides of the story. You guys feel confident because of your success against great programs like Georgia, Oklahoma, VaTech, etc. MSU fans feel confident because our defense will be experienced and honestly pretty badass. I don't buy this bravado from our fans, especially because I feel like I'm hearing the exact same stuff I heard before the Notre Dame game last year and we got our behinds whipped. Personally, I can't remember the last time I was as excited about a non-conference game as I am now. Of course, that has to do with it being a night game, before a nationally-televised audience, with as good of a defense and team as we are expecting. But it also has a ton to do with our opponent, which is a testament to where you guys are as a program. I really respect you guys and again, can't wait for the game. Hopefully you and your son are shown a good time and are treated well in EL (as long as you aren't an obnoxious jackass, you'll be invited into tailgates for copious amount of food and beer).
