mgoblog admits Mark Hollis owns David Brandon

I don't really see how it saves money for MSU fans. Our fans have to buy season tickets to CMU to see the MSU game.

Or be an MSU season ticket holder. And then of course it's just a 2 hour round-trip drive.

What if it were an away game at FAU instead?

The most likely scenario, if we weren't playing @CMU would be another home game vs FCS crap state. Season ticket holders such as myself would be forced to spend money on a game I don't want to see.

    Bam. Just saved me money.

It boggles my mind how some of you don't see the Celebrate the State as a massive boon.

    1. It saves us money
    2. It helps CMU, EMU, and WMU maintain a level of competitiveness, and D1 status (which is good for the state)
    3. It saves the fans money (going to CMU for an away game as opposed to WVU, i.e.)
    4. It's a building block road game for young teams
    5. If we didn't have it, we'd likely just absorb some FCS school for 8 home games
    6. It helps turn the state greener

    Agreed. Makes the state greener.

Like it or not Michigan has the better football tradition in the state.

Playing 3 more games in the state in these different cities is a huge plus.

Remember the old adage: there is no such thing as bad publicity.

There will be more stories written by local papers and more Michigan residents watching MSU football. These games are going to be huge games for these cities and the games will be memorable.

I liked the game at FAU in Detroit as well. I wouldn't ever give up a home game but if you can play another road game in Michigan it is a plus.

Hollis is a master at marketing.

Serious question since I don't know. What is MSU's allotment for the CMU game? I highly doubt that many MSU season ticket holders will even have a chance to get them.

However, playing @ the directional schools takes away from some of the good fortune.

As I season ticket holder, I'm glad that we're playing at the directional schools. I'd rather not pay $45 for a lousy game. Plus, MSU is going to get some big goodwill out of these games.

Don't think -- it can only hurt the ballclub

They seem to want 7 home games. So, likely, which has been the case in recent history, that game would be out of state somewhere.

  • Other than bitching about the band -- a legit complaint -- any scummers whining about this game are missing the point.

They're playing in the premier college football game of the opening weekend, in front of a gigantic primetime audience, and it's going to be hyped to nauseating levels. You know how people say "Recruits are gonna love this!!!!!" over the smallest, most insignificant shit? Know what recruits are really gonna love? Opportunities to play in games like this one. And the money? They're not exactly hard up for athletic funds in Ann Arbor.

I think you have to go out side MSU and purchase a CMU season ticket package.

Yes, if only there were some kind of Friday night game that featured a marquee team from the state of Michigan pitted against a team with a brand name associated with BCS bowls and massive upsets, then they wouldn't have all that thunder. Alas, no such game could possibly exist, could it?

While our game is a big game, you can't deny that both Michigan and Alabama are bigger names than both BSU and MSU. Ours will probably be hyped very little. ESPN and everyone else will be trying to convince the nation that UA vs UofM is a matchup of national title contenders.

or know someone who does. Are they going to sell out the MSU game just to season ticket holders? I wonder if it will turn out like basketball games at Crisler where they try to limit but then just end up selling to the public at some point.

    Yeah

Also, I don't think playing in the Cowboys Classic means anything to anyone. I assumed they were doing it for a big paycheck, but I guess not. Certainly they'll probably get a recruiting bump, particularly in the state of Texas, but it's not like there's a shortage of D1 football programs in that state if that's the goal.

It's just a game against Bama that could be played on campus as a home and home. Just like MSU will be doing.

What was bigger in 2011: Boise State-Georgia or Oregon-LSU? Take off the green glasses and look at the big picture. Alabama-Michigan in Dallas features two of the most recognizable names in the sport. One of those names is the defending national champion while the other has the "return to glory" storyline after sneaking into the BCS last year and being gifted with a weak opponent. You can be an MSU fan and still realize that Alabama-Michigan is going to be the spotlight game of the first weekend, even if it won't be competitive for more than a quarter.

ESPN has the rights to the Friday night BSU game. They hype anything on their airwaves, and MSU-BSU will be the most significant game until Saturday's slate.

That just means they'll be plugging the hell out of that game during the MSU game.

I think this going sideways. It's a big game and I can see why they're playing it, but in reference to the OP, the event is kind of dumb. MSU has the better deal with Bama, I think.

lol Right, realizing that the national media will treat Alabama-Michigan as a bigger game than MSU-Boise State makes me a Michigan fan. Especially given the extremely similar Cowboys Stadium/Boise State games that were played a year ago.

    Bingo It worked for tOSU

tOSU is not Michigan, and Michigan is not tOSU. This deal screams of Alabama AD pulling a fast one over on the incredibly inexperienced Brandon. A more experienced AD like Hollis or Smith at tOSU, would never had entered this deal.

I told Michigan fans that Brandon would be learning on the job. Tnis is an example of a growing pain they're going to have to endure. While there are similarities between running a large corporation and running an Athletic Department, there are also major differences. You can't run a major althletic department fully like a production corporation. Brandon is still learning. He may turn out all right in the long run if Michigan fans can deal with his initially goofs like this one, but their going to continue to be patient.

It'll be interesting to see how the fan base reacts to Brandon if their program takes a step back. He has now hired two high profile coaches. Hoke, and their new WBB coach. While no one probably cares about the WBB coach (its not like here where many of us can at least trace the WBB program back to issue Langeland, they have zero history there) If Hoke becomes their JLS (and whether Michigan fans admit it or not, the jury is still out on Hoke) it could get ugly for Brandon because the Michigan fanbase has never shown patience.

Brandon has tied his job to Hoke (which again, whether M fans admit it or not, was not their first choice). His job will go as the football program goes. Brandon was proven to have made the correct hire last season, but they are not out of the woods yet.

Lets say Michigan loses to 'Bama, ND, OSU, MSU and Nebraska which is entirely possible....and finishes with a 7-5 record and a "flea-bag" bowl. Will Michigan be patient enough to pass this season off as a bump in the road, or will Hoke's seat get hot? (I dont think Michigan will be favored in any of those games honestly). What will happen if they lose a game they are supposed to win (happens to the best programs), and go 6-6? What happens if they miss a bowl? Again, M fans won't see it but it is entirely possible...and to me...7-5 or worse seems more likely than 9-3 or better.

Additionally, I fail to see how Brandon's rookie mistake has anything to do with Hollis....not sure why mgoblog brought it up, actually.
