For the smoke and peat the Laphroaig's and Lagavulin's (esp the 16) for sure. Stepping back from the peat I've really enjoyed Highland Park's stuff, especially the 18. Really balanced and smooth. Also the Glenlivit 15 French Oak is a favorite - also was on sale for a good while at the liquor stores out here in Seattle so that might explain it.

Last bottle I had was the Glenlivet 15 French Oak. Pretty good stuff, and not to hard on the wallet. But that was months ago - I just don't drink much scotch in the summer. It's a fall/winter drink for me. I usually have my wife get me a bottle for my birthday in Oct to kick off my scotch drinking season.

  • glenlivet is the house bottle, was driking it last night

don't think you can find a better quality / price ratio - but if any of you have please let me know

  • This is what Scotch is sitting on my liquor shelf at the moment:

    For the weekly/special occasion drinks
    Laphroaig 10
    Oban 14
    Balvenie 15
    Johnny Walker Gold
Chivas - The Century Of Malts
    Chivas Royal Salute

And for the every day drink
    Glenlevit 12
    Johnny Walker Black
Chivas 12 (not a fan, mainly for guests)

And a bottle of Johnny Walker Red Label as a solvent for oil-based paints.

  • And btw, though there is a lot of blended scotch on my shelf, I prefer single malts. The three bottles of Chivas came from my great uncle, and the Johnny Gold came from a friend for my birthday, but I still enjoy them greatly. Especially the century of Malts, that is like butter. Smoothest whisky I have ever had.

You gave me a glass of that Oban... real tasty...

$25-$30 for a fifth won't get you a whole lot...you might be able to score a decent bottle of Glenlivet for that; it is a good entry level scotch and should keep you satisfied.

For about $35 more you can score a fifth of Oban which is fantastic. For about $45 more you can get yourself a bottle of Talisker, which is excellent. However, for an opener--and for a very reasonable price--you can get a bottle of Auchentoshan, a good lowland malt that will leave you thirsting for more.

The cool thing about Scotch is that you can do just fine, provided that you do not mind spending a minimum of $40.

Auchentoshan is money. Every day I like the Fiddich 12 year, 21 year is good for special occasions. Not scotch but I love Jameson Reserve 18 for every day as well.

It is still in my closet. I am thinking about drinking a bottle of it because I am running low and it is great for Manhattans, but I will give it to you next time I see you.

I am in Minny now, I will be back for some weddings at the end of the month, go ahead and drink it up if you want, other wise I will swing by and grab it when I am in town next, see lilCucumber Breath.

  • Page 2 and no one has mentioned Macallan? Macallan 18 is outstanding Scotch, some would say the best of the Highland/Speyside style.

Lagavulin & Laophraigh are outstanding Islays. I've never had the Ardbeg but might give it a try based on the recommendations here.

Aberlour also makes some outstanding stuff.

Let me know when you are coming back. We can have another glass of Oban and I will give you a bottle of that bourbon. And the little guy is doing great.

The Balvenie 15 is my favorite readily available scotch.

That is a very good scotch.
I also enjoy the Macallan 12 single malt and Highland Park 12 single malt.

  • Glenfiddich and The Glenlivet are commonly available at any decent bar or restaurant. These are a good introductory to single malt scotches and can be had for the price of a single drink. If you want to take another step up in smooth single malts I would recommend Highland Park 12 yr. About $42 a bottle at Total Wine (I hope you have one in your area) Jim Murray rates this as a 92 (out of a hundred) in his whisky bible. He rates very few in the 90’s.

If it’s smoke and peat you want as several others have recommend try the Laphroaig 10 yr. One of my very favorites and also about $40 a bottle.

Find a bar with an extensive scotch selection. They can be easily found. Many cigar bars have this. Although personally I think a cigar ruins a good scotch. Also look for Whisky tastings. Lizzie McCormick’s in Orlando seems to have at least one a month. For $15 to $30 you usually get several drams for some very fine whisky. You can find what you like for a low price rather than shelling out $80 or more for something you may not like.

  • Where would most of you Scotch drinkers rank Johnny Walker Blue Label?

I'm not a regular Scotch drinker, but I've been told Johnny Walker Blue is considered very good. I tried it once and it seemed pretty smooth. A guy at the bar was quite inebriated and ordering it for everyone around. I felt rather compelled to try it, didn't know if this guy might go nuts about someone refusing the drink. The bartender was sympathetic, put it on the rocks and softly said "Drink it slowly.."

The guy buying the rounds pressed me to down it, but I convinced him that I should just savor such a fine Scotch. He bought it, and let me be.

Johinne Blue is a blended scotch whiskey meaning it has a combination of different malts at various ages. Since there is not a date on the bottle it could be 25% 18 year old 15% 12 and 50% 6 year old malt, you do not know, it up to the master distiller to mix and flavor.

In my opinion is a good scotch just grossly over priced, for the same price as a bottle of blue you could get 2 or 3 bottles of some very good scotch and not only have twice as much but discover some great bottles.

As far as how you drink it, some people will give you a hard time for putting water or ice in it, drink it how you like it. For me its two small ice cubes just enough to add a little water but not dilute it. cheers

Good info. I've heard that, about getting razzed for adding ice or water. This was the case of a nice bartender (cute gal) helping me out since the "happy" drunk was insisting I drink what he was buying, even though I wasn't used to drinking Scotch.

I think JB Blue is a vatted not blend. Blends contain grain alcohol and vatted scotches contain only single malts. That said you are spot on. It is very smooth with a great taste but I think the price is more a marketing gimmick than an actual value.

Many, many scotch drinkers add a little water. This opens up the flavor. Take a sniff of it before you add the water and then after. It makes a difference.

Some scotch snobs insist on spring water from the same water source the scotch came from. That's gayer than wine snobs.

Drink it the way you like it. Don't listen the to other BS.

  • Drink it the way you like. Personally I like chilled scotch which i take a few sips of neat, then I add a few drops or a quick pour of cool water. I don't really like ice cubes because in my opinion they dilute it too much, but to each his own.

I'm also considering getting a set of Whiskey Stones off ThinkGeek.

I bought whisky (please no 'e' when refering to scotch. Yes, that's snobbery I confess) from Total Wine for $20. They work very well.
