Wow, Chris Polk and Edwin Baker are still on the board? They were the next best RB's since the fourth round.

Because teams have an easier time getting players from their area to join the team as a Free Agent and a harder time getting some guy from the other side of the country to sign.
So if a team has 2 guys they are interested in, they are more apt to take the guy they can't get and risk the other guy signing as a free agent. Do you get it now?

this is an awfully bizarre argument. i'd like a few examples to back it up.

Hemingway bailed Detard out so many times last year. Roundtree, Scrodoms and those other little guys aren't as good at 500.

looks like they'll both be going the UDFA route. rarely see BCS guys in these dredge of the draft picks. teams like to prove how smart they are with small school guys.

wrong. very very wrong.
Whitehead was projected in the 5th - where we drafted him
The Albion kid was projected in the 4th/5th - got him in the 5th
Travis Lewis was projected as a 4th round guy - got him in the 7th.
The only one you could make an UDFA argument for is the NMSU DB...but every team takes one or two of those guys in the last two rounds. they are a crap shoot. I'd much rather they take 3 big, fast, strong DBs and see if one or two can make the team than waste them on some other reach. if nothing else, they are all textbook special teams players who can always help on that front.
Once again, the Lions had a very good draft - got 3 needed players to start (all at tremendous value spots to boot) and worked on depth after that.

huh...Mayock just said almost every team took Chris Polk off their boards entirely because of "degenerative shoulder issues".

I had a feeling that, if Baker didn't go at pick 243 to the Packers, he wouldn't go at all. Obviously, I'm hoping that feeling is wrong.
Regardless, from a program standpoint, I'm happy with this draft. Four Spartans were taken that, I feel, will be impact players in the NFL. It was a good day for the program.

again...teams aren't interested in the risk with guys like that anymore. except for Cincinnati and maybe Baltimore. and the Pats are arrogant enough to believe they can change him.
He punched a cop in the face. why waste the pick when there's a guy you like who has all the character assets you are looking for to go with size and speed at the same position?
