  • For those who watch them, are the Canucks really that great? The Avalanche are 2nd in their division, but they would be in 5th place in the Pacific. Every team in the Pacific is at least 5 points behind Chicago and would be in 5th place in the Central. I know they're a very strong team, but I wonder how much they're helped by playing in a terrible division.

  • So, let me know if I'm wrong here.

If Detroit loses on Saturday, they're the 6th seed.

They need to win and have Nashville lose, otherwise they're the 5th seed. Also 5th seed if they get 1 point.

Nashville is @ Colorado who it looks like is eliminated if they lose tonight (down 4-2 with 6 min left).

I don't know that they can be the 6th seed. Chicago has to win (not in the SO) and Detroit has to lose in regulation. If Chicago has more head-to-head points, then they will the 5th seed (and I don't know if they do or not). Detroit has to win and Nashville has to lose in regulation for Detroit to pass them if I'm reading the standings correctly.

  • Here is the 4/5/6 race laid out by a preds blogger. Chicago can only pass Detroit if they win in regulation based on better head to head record.

Preds Win or OT/SO Loss Preds regulation loss
DET regulation win NSH, DET, CHI DET, NSH, CHI
DET overtime win NSH, DET, CHI DET, NSH, CHI
DET shootout win NSH, DET, CHI DET, NSH, CHI
CHI regulation win NSH, CHI, DET NSH, CHI, DET
CHI overtime win NSH, DET, CHI NSH, DET, CHI
CHI shootout win NSH, DET, CHI NSH, DET, CHI

  • It's an absolute clusterf*ck right now with teams jostling for position. You have DET-CHI-NSH and PHX-SJ-LA in their horse races. The Blues can win get the first seed in the West if they just win tonight v. PHX and tomorrow @ DAL and can take the Presidents' Trophy if NYR loses to WSH on Saturday. This is absolutely ridiculous.

  • Can't stand the Pens. Such an arrogant organization. Loved Torts calling them out after yet another cheap shot.

compared to baseball, football, and basketball, how overrated is home ice in playoff NHL hockey? i know home field is HUGE in football and home court means a TON in basketball, but im just not convinced that home ice is as big as advantage. does anyone have the home win %'s in playoff hockey handy for reference?

    Home Ice (Dis)Advantage?

Pin ItNow that the playoffs are well underway, we at VFMS pondered a very big question: is home ice really an advantage?  So, being the analytical statistics person, I tackled this big question.  First, I compiled all of the results

  • The two scenarios I'm hoping for are Wings getting the four seed with the Blues getting the one seed. The Wings aren't going to lose to the Blues, and I think they can take the Preds, even if they're the five, (obviously, seeds would have to hold for round two).

I'd also love for the Wings to be the six if L.A. is the three, (I live in L.A., and this might be my last chance to see the Wings in the playoffs for a while).

Blackhawks fan here. I see no reason the Hawks want to win tomorrow at the Joe. A win would mean being the 5 seed and having to play the preds who have given the Hawks fits this year. The Wings on the other hand need the win and hope for a pred loss and they can still get the 4 seed. I bet the Hawks hold out a lot of players who have had some dings. Already announced no Toews. He will come back for game 1. The 6th seed is not a bad spot playing whoever wins the west div. The 4/5 series in both confernces are going to be great series. My guess is Nashville ends up the 4, Wings 5 and the Hawks 6.

Could be the Sharks, who are finishing strong.

If I'm the Blackhawks, that's still better than playing Nashville in the first round.

I don't disagree. The primary incentive for the Wings to win is home ice. I honestly don't see the Preds losing to the Av's tomorrow night if they need to win to secure 4th, but stranger things have happened.

I think both Chicago and Detroit would prefer traveling west to facing the Preds

I feel like post lockout there has been a ton of upsets and home-ice hasn't proven to be that critical, but have you seen the wings play on the road this year? 5 seed vs NSH is the worst draw we could have gotten, if we get out of this series (and are healthy) I'll feel great about our chances.

Hockey is full of surprises, look how many 8 seeds have taken out the 1 seed in both conferences over the last decade.

That can de directly attributed to the goalie. Doesn't matter how good your team is, run into a hot goalie in the playoffs and you're toast.

    Always Smooth.

Detroit seems to find the hottest goalies in the playoffs. Name a goalie that came out of nowhere and signed a huge contract and 9/10 times they beat Detroit in the playoffs the previous year.

I can only remember 2 times ( there may be one or 2 more) since 95 that the Wings have had a goalie steal a game in the playoffs. Once Vernon and the other Hasek, both against Colorado in the conference finals. Detroit always has average to solid goaltending, but it is so rare to watch a game that they should have lost that the goalie stole for them. Osgood was good but he never won a game for them. The one time they got the hot goalie (CuJo), he took a dump on the ice for the Wings and was run out of town.

    Always Smooth.

  • Not playoff-related, but Stamkos scored his 60th goal tonight. 179 career goals and he is barely 22 years old.

  • Chicago will play Phoenix in the first round, but the other 4 spots are still up in the air

    HillSpartan

  • It looks pretty certain now that it will be: VAN v. SJ, STL v. LA, PHX v. CHI, and NSH v. DET. I imagine that Detroit will be salivating at the chance to play St. Louis in the 2nd round with the way that the Blues have been playing over their last 5 games.

Wings will have their hands full with Preds. No reason to look past first round the way the Wings finished in March, with only the leafs having as bad as W-L record. Besides, regular season means nothing now.

Yeah, I know. It will be a struggle for both teams, but that just sets up a potentially great 2nd round match-up. Plenty of time before that happens, though.

So in every playoff thread I see on here, there are Wings fans referring to the red-hot goalie scenario. I know this happens, and the most recent example I can think of is the Caps and Pens both getting Halak'ed (where the hell is he now?) a few years ago. But what were the series earlier this decade that seemed to have burned into y'all's consciousness?
