Updated timeline for people as they wake up:

4:59 AM: Westwood birdies the first two. Tiger birdies the first. Good start for a couple of the favorites. Jeev Milkha Singh and Paul Lawrie tied for the lead at -3.

5:29 AM: Westwood gave both shots back with a double at the third. Tiger still at -1 along with many others, including Bubba and McDowell. Lawrie still leading at -3, and J. Singh is back to -2.

5:42 AM: Tiger birdies the 4th to get to -2. Lawrie bogied the 8th and is tied for the lead with Tiger at -2. Seven guys behind them at -1.

5:54 AM: Adam Scott joins the lead with Tiger and Lawrie at -2. Tiger on the 6th tee. Lawrie just finished his front 9.

6:12 AM: Wow, Tiger just birdied the toughest hole on the course, the 492 yard par 4 6th. Only the third birdie of the day there. He now has the outright lead at -3. Bubba, Lawrie, and Scott behind him at -2.

6:29 AM: Tiger is on fire. Another birdie at 7 to move to -4. Bubba Watson birdied the 8th and is one stroke back at -3.

6:49 AM: Adam Scott with a birdie at the 12th to move into a tie for the lead with Tiger at -4. Bubba and McDowell are one shot back at -3.

6:59 AM: Tiger at -4 with a front 9 score of 30. Adam Scott still tied for the lead.

We're approaching 7 AM, so I'll stop the updates here. I assume the thread will update itself now.

The overhead makes it look like this course is right in the middle of a city.

Yet with all those low scores Phil gets a double on the easiest hole. And is on his knees looking for his ball on the next. I'm not sure if he's more fun to watch when he's playing well or poorly.

Could be a nice Rory/TW battle come Sunday. Watching Phil make a 7 on a par 5 was pretty funny.

I played high school golf with the guy who's 2 under and T-14 right now. Justin Hicks. I beat him once in two years of high school play. He was pretty damn good then and obviously still is now.

These are good conditions for the Open Championship. Look on a map and you'll see that England is a lot further north than the US. Royal Lytham and St Anne is as far north of the equator as Newfoundland. In addition, the Open is always played on a course right by the sea. In this case the Irish Sea.
