tOfficial Case Closed on Paterno's Legacy

  • I know it has been posted, but this deserves its own thread. JoePa may have won some football games, but he will always be an SOB in my book:

"The e-mails also would suggest Paterno knew more than he said: On Feb. 26, 2001, CNN reported, Schultz suggests contacting authorities, but the next night, Curley writes to Spanier that after talking with Paterno, he would like to "work with" Sandusky instead."

Nice cover up Joe, I wonder how many kids lives were ruined as a result of your decision to "work with" the pedophile.

If i was a penn state student, I would tear down that jopa statue like the iraqi's did to saddam hussein's in 2003 and demand that the school shut down its athletic department for a period of five years to ensure that it was thoroughly cleansed.

We'd have to keep the LGT for 5 more years? NOOOOOO!!!!!

I agree about tearing down the statue - some things are unforgivable - but I don't really see what closing down the athletic program accomplishes. I would fire who deserves to be fired and bring in an independent investigator to thoroughly (and publicly) document the university's moral and legal failings. Anyone who interferes with the investigation or is found to be less than honest is fired. No need to directly punish the current student/athletes or the fans that enjoy watching PSU sports.

Joe Pa at PSU goes a lot further than just a statue and the Athletic Department. He gave money to almost every University department...and basically paid for their entire Library system.

That would piss me off. I'd stop donating if I was an Alum and tell them to pay it out of the endowment.

I see what you are saying to a certain extent. The fact is, Penn State is probably shaking in its boots right now with how much of this is going to come out. I am not saying they are trying to cover things up, these are probably great people, but the University is going to get sued through the roof.

They need to find the people who had any knowledge of this and deal with them appropriately this time around. Some volleyball player who is on the dean's list doesn't need to be punished for this. That I completely agree with.

...then let's burn the library system down to the ground and all of the other departments that received blood money.

The volleyball player won't be punished...all student athletes will be permitted to transfer to other schools without losing eligibility.

Nahh..you'd probably SAY you would on an internet message board. And then not do much.

  • I believe it was Andy Staples today on SI.com who raised the excellent point that the US Department of Education has ultimate jurisdiction here and may investigate, with the loss of PSU's accreditation the issue at hand. That, in crude sports terminology, is basically the death penalty for the entire university. Doubt it gets that far, but I don't think the NCAA is going anywhere near this for a long time, no matter what Emmert said three months ago. It's bigger than that. They'll probably be told not to, and I seriously doubt any one hears about it publicly.

So you think all of those student-athletes are at PSU just to play their respective sport? As long as they can continue to be on another team's roster (let alone play) in that sport, in a different school, in a different city and probably in a different state, taking a setback in their education, all would be ok for them as long as they could freely transfer?

  • I think people are reading too much into those emails. They don't look good for Joe, that's for sure, but they are too vague to really say for certain what Joe knew and what he did.

Then how do you explain this?

  • The phrase "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" totally sums up Joe Paterno's regime at PSU. The entire PSU community worshipped this man like a God...and will be paying a very heavy price for it for years to come....and rightly so. But nothing...not even money...will recompense the damage done to all those young men who remain scarred for life by the evil perpetrated by Jerry Sandusky while Joe Paterno and the PSU administration knew about it and yet did absolutely nothing to stop it.

Yeah...or, they can stay at the school and finish out as a student (supposing their department has not been burned down as a result of the sanctions).

Why punish any corrupt school's athletic department if the "not fair to punish current student athletes" bottom level line of logic is allowed to prevail...

...then the volleyball player continues to attend classes. Football players at SMU weren't forced to transfer...they could have stayed on as students.

  • The odd thing is that Sandusky could grant interviews one day and talk about communication with school officials asking him to "tone things down" or "stop using the showers", etc... essentially hanging Penn State out to dry. Sandusky likes to babble on about things and will probably eventually grant interviews. Who knows what he'll say.

If he doesn't off himself (or someone else kills him in prison), once his appeals are used up, I bet Sandusky leaks all sorts of info in interviews.

As Staples said, the IRS doesn't prosecute murderers who pay their taxes. This isn't about football right now. It's way bigger than that and beyond the NCAA at this time.
