tOfficial Case Closed on Paterno's Legacy

  • Paterno family now wanting all emails released and are going after the FBI on this. Really? These people have some serious balls. I hope your family has saved their $$ because they aren't going to get shit from Joe's estate after all the lawsuits.

    1. WTF are you doing calling more attention to this,
    2. Do you really think going after the FBI is a smart idea, and
    3. Do you really think any of the other emails are going to exonerate Paterno?

Purported e-mails suggest Paterno may have altered decision not to report abuse - CNN.com

Joe Paterno may have played a greater role that previously known in a decision not to report Jerry Sandusky, according to university e-mails.

Just because the family says he didn't use email, doesn't mean he didn't, and if he did, there WILL be evidence of it.

Consider also: if the others knew JoePa didn't communicate by email, all of their contact with him would have been over the phone. They still could have emailed each other (which is apparent) and JoePa could have been solidly in the mix anyway.

(And those opening statements by you prove you are an idiot).

Twisted around just like mainstream media. You call me an idiot? It smells like a witch hunt.

Just because the media says he used email, doesn't mean he did. You see what I did there?

Joe Pa had nothing to hide. The garbage media will spoon feed you stories that he did.

Selling out for website traffic and publicity. The media wouldn't do that. The media will ride this thing as long as possible.

His son is a lawyer, you think he is that stupid?

uhoh So the media is ginning all this up themselves and they are just out to get Paterno? Then why did the Paterno family just voluntarily go to the media about calling on the FBI to release all of the emails? And there are a lot of dumb lawyers out there. I know a lot of good lawyers but a ton of bad ones. Just because someone can get a law degree and pass the bar exam doesn't make them a genius.

Why would the media need to go on a witch hunt against Paterno? There is no motivation for them to do so. The guy is already dead.

The odd thing is that Sandusky could grant interviews one day and talk about communication with school officials asking him to "tone things down" or "stop using the showers", etc... essentially hanging Penn State out to dry. Sandusky likes to babble on about things and will probably eventually grant interviews. Who knows what he'll say.

If he doesn't off himself (or someone else kills him in prison), once his appeals are used up, I bet Sandusky leaks all sorts of info in interviews.

No he won't. He's nuts and he thinks he did nothing wrong. The dude is going to take his fucked up head to the grave, whether it's self-imposed or not.

Sandusky dies of old age in prison. He's too much of a coward to kill himself otherwise he'd cmmitted suicide at home on bail

  • Everybody is ripping on Joe Pah - much of it deserved. As more comes out on this, it appears that many levels of the Penn State admin is in the cover up.

My only question is, can the NCAA impose sanctions against Penn State? I'm assuming they can. Are they even talking? I agree with others - shut down the football program for 2 years - minimum.

Lack of institutional control. It's what we got with Perles and this lack of control is way worse. If they don't get it I'd like the NCAA to explain why they didn't get anything and we did. I don't think you can shut them down but they should lose scholies.

No investigation has been launched. Emmert said three months ago that they might, but I frankly doubt anything happens until the Department of Education decides whether or not to look into it. Football isn't that high on the comparitive priority list in this case.

Not sure I follow. The abuse occurred in the football program, done by a football coach. Wouldn't football be high on the priority list in terms of some kind of institutional punishment?

My take is Penn State decided the "Football Program" is bigger than sexual abuse against children. A worthwhile punishment is to give that Football Program the death penalty.

The cover up may have gone all the way to the University administration. That supersedes athletics. The University's accreditation may be at stake. That's a bigger deal than football. The Department of Education are the Feds. The NCAA, well, aren't the Feds. Not hard to follow.

I'm going to give it a shot, although I don't know how close I am to JYD's thinking:

Benoit and Paterno are both symbolic agents of change for the organizations they represent. Of course the actions they're associated with are reprehensible but when you think Benoit you think of his brain being scrambled from a variety of actions associated with his job.

That, or JoePa murdered his family. I'm reaching here.

There is no way the University's accreditation gets revoked. That would be ridiculous. There are 96,000 students. Where are they all going to go? The rest of the state schools in Pennsylvania can't handle a fraction of that. The out-of-state students would be OK, but destroying a huge university like that would be a serious undeserved blow to the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Penn State is too important of an institution.

I don't disagree with you. But it's a possibility, if a remote one. Things like that need to be covered before any serious penalties to the athletic department are determined. This is bigger than sports.

I agree about tearing down the statue - some things are unforgivable - but I don't really see what closing down the athletic program accomplishes. I would fire who deserves to be fired and bring in an independent investigator to thoroughly (and publicly) document the university's moral and legal failings. Anyone who interferes with the investigation or is found to be less than honest is fired. No need to directly punish the current student/athletes or the fans that enjoy watching PSU sports.

Duh, they brought in the former director of the FBI months ago to do an independent report, which is due out soon.
