tOfficial Game of Thrones Season 2 thread

  • Episode 4

    New Characters introduced
    The Mountain (Ser Gregor Clegane)
    Polliver and the Tickler
    Ser Lancel Lannister
    Chick on the wagon
    Roose Bolton

You may also notice there were a few women that were covered head to toe with a flag attached to their back. They are the silent sisters and they take care of the dead.

    Starks –
Robb – There is another start with the Direwolves. Grey Wind comes in to start an attack. Robb is successful with another battle, it sounds as if it is near Lannisport (sp?) which is a Lannister controlled area. There is a wounded soldier on the ground with 2 women trying to take care of him. Robb holds the man down while one of the women saws off part of his leg to save him. I have an idea of who this woman is, but other people can speculate. She says she is from Volantis (not sure where that is). She blames Robb for the war and there is an exchange where we find out that Robb is just out to kill Joffrey, and really has no plans after that, he doesn’t want to sit on the Iron Throne. There is also dialogue with Roose Bolton, Robb tells Roose he isn’t going to torture men, and flaying is outlawed in the north. Roose replies they aren’t in the north anymore.
Arya – She has been captured by The Mountain (Ser Gregor), although he doesn’t know who she is. Arya has started her ‘prayer’ before sleeping, right now it is Cersei, Joffrey, Ser Illyn Payne and the Hound. When she first gets to the camp, you can hear someone getting tortured in the background. The Mountain is selecting prisoners and they are being questioned by, who I’m assuming is The Tickler. They are asking the villagers where is the gold, and what do they know about outlaws in the area. Arya notices that one of the men has Needle (her sword from Jon), I believe it was Polliver who has it. Gendry gets selected to answer questions next, the bucket is attached to his stomach with a rat inside. Before the questioning can get started Lord Tywin shows up a day earlier than he was supposed to. He tells the Mountain that it is stupid to be killing the prisoners as they need labor who can work. Lord Tywin also points out that Arya is a girl disguised as a boy, all of the prisoners are to be given jobs around the keep. All of this takes place in Harrenhall, which is supposed to be haunted, but also one of the largest castles in the land.
Bran – Not in this episode
Jon – Not in this episode
    Sansa – See Joffrey.
Catelyn – She is still with King Renly. Littlefinger (Lord Baelish) comes to her tent after having a chat with Margaery where he hints that people are starting to talk about Renly and her brother, Loras Tyrel. Littlefinger goes to Catelyn’s tent and she accuses him of betraying her trust in him and that he is a big reason that Ned is dead. She threatens him with a dagger and tells him that she never wants to see him again. Littlefinger has been sent to broker a deal to get Jaime back, and tells her that BOTH daughters are doing fine right now, and she has a chance to get them back. As a token of trust, he has a chest brought in. Catelyn opens it, I’m assuming it is either Ned’s remains or something of his. The chest was brought in by the silent sisters. Catelyn is also seen on the hill with Renly and Stannis.

    Baratheons –
Joffrey – He is pissed off that Robb has won another battle and is seen with a crossbow pointed at Sansa who is on the ground begging for her life. Joffrey orders one of his knights to hurt Sansa, but to keep her face pretty. I believe it was Ser Meryn who starts to beat her and strip her on Joffrey’s command, while he sits there and smiles. This is happening in front of the whole court. Tyrion and Bronn enter the hall while this is happening and order them to stop. The Hound gives Sansa his own cloak to help cover her. Tyrion embarrasses Joffrey in front of everyone and also makes sure that the Knights know when he is giving a lesson and when he is threatening their life. Tyrion and Sansa leave the hall together, and Tyrion asks her in a hushed voice if she wants out of the betrothel, she says she loves her king and she is loyal to him. Tyrion kind of looks at her in disbelief. Joffrey is later seen going to his room where there are two whores waiting for him from Tyrion. Instead of sleeping with the women, Joffrey says he wants them to pleasure each other, but after one is naked he tells one woman to hit the other. He takes off his belt and tells them to use that instead. After the belt isn’t doing enough damage, he grabs a scepter and forces the woman to use that. He tells her to beat the girl or she will get the same fate and he wholly plans on taking them back to his Uncle. For whatever reason Joffrey hates women, and loves to see them tortured and abused, he loves the power he has, but hates when he is embarrassed. I’m not sure if the one woman is killed or not.
Renly – There is a meeting on the side of a cliff between Renly and Stannis. Renly shows Stannis that all the banners he has are enough to take Kings Landing and he will be the rightful King. He points out Melisandre is a very good reason to discover faith. That Stannis was always a rigid man, a stern man, a great strategist, but was never a godly man. Stannis gives Renly until morning to join him or he would not be responsible for anything that happened. Renly laughs and rides off.
Stannis – After the meeting with Renly, Stannis and Davos are on a ship at night. Stannis and Davos have a meeting, Stannis asks Davos why he carries his cutoff fingers around his neck. Davos says it is to bring him luck, and remind him that he wouldn’t be where he is today without Stannis. That his justice and cleaving skills were swift and clean. Stannis asks Davos to use his smugglers ways to get Melisandre under the castle. I believe it is Castle Rock, not sure if it was mentioned in the show. Davos and Mel row at night to get her to where she needs to go. They finally get into some caves, but there is now a gate in the way to keep people from getting under the castle. Mel undresses and everyone can see she is pregnant, she goes into labor and a shadow demon or something is born.

    Lannisters –
Tyrion – After breaking up things in the hall with Joffrey ordering Sansa to be beaten, he goes to his room. Lancel knocks on the door, and Tyrion invites him in to have some wine. Lancel is there to give Tyrion an order from Cersei to release Pycelle. Tyrion confronts Lancel and accuses him of sleeping with Cersei, he lets him know that Joffrey probably won’t take to kindly to finding out someone is sleeping with his mother. Lancel breaks down and finally agrees to spy for Tyrion, letting him know every step that Cersei is going to take. Tyrion also says he will release Pycelle.
Cersei – Not in this episode.
Tywin – In the episode, went over with Arya.

    Targaryen –
Daenerys – Finally, one of her riders returned and he has found a city, Qarth. They travel to the city and are greeted at the gates by the Council of 13. I missed about 3 minutes of the dialogue during this part, for some reason my cable got messed up. The gist of what I got was that the council wanted to see the dragons before allowing her and her Khalasar into the city. She refuses to show the dragons to them. She did mention that where she is from you don’t invite someone to your city and then leave them outside. The merchant she is talking to says she is not where she is from, and the greatest city in the world will continue to stay that way by not allowing Dothraki in. One of the merchants on the council says he will vouch for them. The council reluctantly agrees, but finally opens the gates to allow them in.

Quite a bit happened in this episode and it is setting up quite a bit. I think for the most part I covered everything important that happened, although I might have some of the details incorrect.

The only naked women in this episode was the one whore in Joffrey’s room. She looked like the one that was on the ship with Theon at the beginning of the series, but I didn’t compare.

A couple of corrections that Zapp Brannigan has brought to my attention. This is copied from his post.

A few additions/clarifications to InTenSity's post on the previous page:
    - Melisandre and Davos are under Storm's End when she conjures the shadow assassin.
    - Xaro Xhoan Daxos was introduced in Qarth. He was the one of the 13 who stood up for Dany.
    - I'm with others who assume that the brunette at the beginning of the episode is Jeyne Westerling, although they are introducing her a bit early and she's definitely not from Volantis.

Sort of. The human actions far outweigh the magic happenings in terms of importance in the story, but there's also a lot of hints that magic is slowly creeping back into the world in importance and frequency.

Yea, it's hinted at when Bran is told by Maestar Llewan that magic died when the last dragons did, not knowing that 3 had been born recently.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Looks of stuff that was only referenced or alluded to in the books is taking a more prominent role in the tv show. The smoke monster queefing - WTF?

I was just trying to stick to this season, I didn't do these for season 1. I was just going by who was coming in new this season and hadn't been in previous episodes. Both of them were in Season 1 but very briefly.

I also left out the part about Melisandre getting naked before smoking.

  • Seems like they are going a bit over the top in terms of the Renly/Loras relationship and trying to make Joffrey seem sadistic. I know they have to play up the drama for TV but it seems like too much sometimes.

    Joffrey IS that sadistic.

They're taking some liberties, but nothing over the top (yet).

They actually have had to tone down how sadistic Joffrey is, IMO.

I guess Blackfish wasn't casted and neither were Meera or Jojen. How can HBO tell Bran's story without Meera and Jojen? They are critical in Bran's story.

Also, regarding Blackfish, he seems like a pretty important character to leave out. He's Cat's brother and becomes lord of Riverrun once Hoster dies. He;s in command when the Freys and Lannisters are seiging Riverrun, and has important dialogue with Jaime. He's an important character.

The Blackfish is Cat's Uncle not her brother, but I agree he is a very important character. He is Robb's go to guy as far as military council and a big reason he is doing so well in that area up to this point.

Yea you are right, been so long since I have read the books. He still an important character in the riverlands.

  • I was an avid reader of the books and I love what the show is doing. Benioff and Weiss really are smart about the whole thing. The books read very oddly with the changing POV characters so they have to fill in a lot of blanks for the show. They have hired actors making good money so despite the large number of characters, they have to give their main ones their due time (thus extra scenes for Renly, Joffrey, Littlefinger, etc than you get in the books). I give them credit for leaving Jaime out of the last few episodes. I was afraid they'd completely change his story to allow that actor some more parts this season.

I loved the scene with Mellisandre this episode. I though in the first episode this season with the wine cup on Dragonstone wasn't nearly as terrifying as she reads in the book. This one makes her seem badass though.

I liked it better that the Renly/Loras stuff was mostly implied in the book. Horrible casting with Loras as well. The dude looks like a whimp. It is hard to believe he is one of the best warriors in the 7 kingdoms.

I do like the approach they took with Maergery being wise to the Renly/Loras situation and trying to play it in her favor.

The scene last night with the Scepter, Joffrey and the two chicks seemed like overkill. The same with the littlefinger stuff. Joffrey is evil. Littlefinger cannot be trusted. We get it.

    ************ SPOILER RESPONSE *****************

I think they can put Theon's next major move into season 3, and introduce Meera and Jojen at the beginning of that. FWIW, they're splitting Book 3 into Seasons 3 and 4, and they're obviously showing all the stuff with Robb that happens off-screen this year. I think Book 3 is enough for about 18-20 total episodes, so there should be time to fit an episode or two of "new" characters into it.

Also, I think Meera/Jojen are only in Winterfell for a little bit of time before the next major thing happens, so I wouldn't be shocked if they're saved for the end of this season or even delayed to the next one.

The Blackfish is a minor character in terms of face time, though he could be introduced easily.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I re-read Book 3 about a month ago. I really thought that part happened halfway through, but it's in the 700s of a 1100 page book.

I'm back on Book 4 now, after finishing Dance with Dragons. I have a new appreciation for Feast now; much better the 2nd time around.

I'm laboring through Feast for the first time right now. I wonder if the deal that GRRM has with HBO is that whatever book is after Dragons is to be released after season 4. It sounds as if Season 5-6 or 7 will be both Feast and Dragons. I don't know how far along the books move, but if only a couple of years pass from when Ned and Robert die to where they are in the books, the children actors are going to be too old. Has HBO given the green light on season 4 already? I know they picked up 3 half way through the first episode.
