  • What'd you think of that "3rd goal" at the end of US-North Korea. In any other sport it definitely wasn't possession, but did the keeper have her hand on it? I think not, but the ref probably made the best call.

keeper touched it then lost it, then USA kicked it home

if the keeper touches it then it is loose in the air is it still considered possession?

thought by rule it was probably called right but terrible rule, that should be a good goal 100% of the time

  • Because I know Heathens like these, here are some updates on the new FIFA rankings:

    - Mexico jumped 19 spots, and is now #9 in the world rankings (just behind Croatia and just ahead of Argentina).
    - USA dropped 2 spots, from 22 to 24
    - Brazil dropped from 3rd to 5th
    - Argentina dropped from 5th to 10th
    - Spain is comfortably in 1st place, over 200 points ahead of #2 (Netherlands)

Mexico's ranking is sure to drop really soon, since we're sending a really terrible team to Copa America... and that terrible team just had 8 players (3 or 4 starters included) suspended due to a crazy party at the team's hotel in Ecuador which included prostitutes. The most notorious player to be kicked off the team is Jonathan Dos Santos, brother of Giovani and current Barcelona player (although he doesn't get many 1st team minutes).

The rankings still baffle me. Does anybody really believe that England has a better squad than Brazil, or even Argentina? Have they done anything to merit such a lofty ranking?

Soccer rankings (all of them) are silly, yes.

It always strikes me as odd when someone makes a statement about how one team is so clearly better than the other, yet than calls into question some arbitrary ranking system. That individual makes their determination by what they see, which is far more arbitrary. Rankings at least state how they make such a call, and look at all games. That said, I have little faith in the FIFA rankings, but think the Elo Ratings tend to get it just about right, at least to the point of settling some rather meaningless debate about where teams stand at any given point in time. And I do think you bring up a valid point about what constitutes a true NT game, and the Mexico limited roster (by choice, CONCACAF, drugs and hookers) is a good example. Here is a link to the wiki on the Elo Ratings.....

Recent mediocrity from the US has them at a more than fair 28, Mexico deservedly in the top 10, and what's this, Brazil and Argentina ahead of England....... ;)

FIFA rankings are based on wins and ties. If you won a ton of games in May or June in a previous year (like Brazil did, winning the Confed Cup in '09), then those points will be devalued. Since they lost points from all those confed cup wins, their ranking dropped. Brazil will easily pass England in the next rankings cycle, since regional cups have more value than friendlies.

    Whoa whoa whoa...

Is Nasri really leaving or are those bastards from Manchester (red OR blue, fits either way) just trying to poach him? Wenger really needs to keep one of the Fabregas/Nasri pair if he wants to finish in the top four next season.

  • Sky Sports News reported that City has put in a bid of 20 Million for Nasri and also in talks for a 7 Mil move for Clichy.

I would have thought that Nasri would want to stay on if Cesc left because he would then be the main man running the show in midfield which is what he has wanted all along. If he does leave for the money at City then this will leave a bad, bad mark on the Gooner fans. Maybe Cashley Cole all over again upset.

here is a somewhat funny image in the circumstances though it is hard to stomach....

Well...Burkina Faso was also playing in that tournament, and you can't count on them to ever make a real World Cup. Gotta take it with a grain of salt.

But yeah, the US looked like dog shit that had been eaten, and then shat out again.

WOTS is that City is only placing a bid to piss off United.

Wenger needs to come out and say that Nasri is not for sale, though. Start building on the roster that you have, not overhauling it every single summer transfer window.

First off, don't believe anything you read this time of year unless it actually has quotes (and even then, be skeptical, as the journalists will use quotes from years ago, misconstrue other quotes, and flat out make up some others). But don't blame United or even City, blame Nasri. He's got only a year left on his contract, has not yet signed, and comes out with quotes stating that he'd be interested in playing for United. He's just playing the media games for a contract. He says this stuff in hopes of forcing Arsenal's hand on a contract. If Arsenal doesn't cave, they either sell him this year (where he'll get a new contract from the new club), or he'll be able to sign anywhere on a free transfer a year from now.

Meanwhile, Arsenal is slow-playing Nasri's contract talks until the Fabregas situation is worked out. Barca want him on the cheap and are using his known desire to play for them as their bargaining chip. If Fabregas leaves, I'd expect a new contract for Nasri to happen quickly thereafter. If it looks like Cesc is staying, I think they'll let Nasri go. It's really hard to see them selling both. But then again, they are getting a little old for Wenger's tastes.

If it were any club but Arsenal, I'd be less worried. But Wenger has this recent habit of just total ambivalence in the transfer window. I understand the philosophy of purchasing promising prospects, I really do. But when you have a squad that is sooooo close to winning a title, and you do absolutely nothing to give them the little push over the edge (signing Laurent Koscielny does NOT count), then your fanbase will start to lose some faith.

I'm worried that Arsenal is going to lose Fabregas and Nasri on top of Clichy, and all Wenger will do is sign a half-dozen French teenagers that nobody has ever heard of.

That's the only reason I think that it is possible that they'll sell both (or all three if you include Clichy), because Wenger has this habit of selling players just as they're reaching their peak, and replacing them with youth.

I seriously start to wonder if it's all about job security. The pressure should be on him to do better with this squad. So he goes with another youth movement and he has a built in excuse for the next 4-5 years that the team is too young. As a rival, I'd like to see it play out like that again. But on the other hand, I like a strong Arsenal to help fight off Chelsea and City.
