That's the only reason I think that it is possible that they'll sell both (or all three if you include Clichy), because Wenger has this habit of selling players just as they're reaching their peak, and replacing them with youth.

I seriously start to wonder if it's all about job security. The pressure should be on him to do better with this squad. So he goes with another youth movement and he has a built in excuse for the next 4-5 years that the team is too young. As a rival, I'd like to see it play out like that again. But on the other hand, I like a strong Arsenal to help fight off Chelsea and City.

He's not getting any younger, though. Do you really think that he's making moves with a view to what's going to happen 5 seasons down the road? If he wants to win another bit of silverware before he retires, then he's got to start building on what he's got.

Nasri/Fabregas, Song and Wilshere make a great core group of midfielders. Sagna and Vermaelen can do well in defense, but they need a bit of steel back there (go kidnap Hangeland.) Goalkeeping is a joke, but good keepers are available for a reasonable price. RvP can score if you give him a good supply of horse placenta to keep him healthy.

It's hilarious that he sells players and replaces them with 'youth', because Nasri is 24, Fabregas is 24 and Clichy is 25. You can build around those three for another 4-5 season easily. They ARE young!

  • arsenal's fans take of the Clichy thing here.... not surprised.... being in the last year of his contract... if he wants to sign for another 5 years.. cool... if not... go!!! it is like arsenal have in the last 20-30 years have good left back after good left back... kenny sansom then nigel winterburn then ashley cole now clichy.... and we have the next ones behind him in Kieran Gibbs and Armand Traore (who spent last season out on loan at juve)

so if it is clear he isn't signing... get as much as we can....

I still think the moment arsenal threaten to take barcelona to fifa for taping up cesc is the moment that situation will finally be sorted... because we all see exactly what is happening... they will then back off or stump up

after the dust has cleared... I think clichy is gone, cesc stays and so will nasri.... I do expect bendtner , denilson , Rosicky and Eboue to go....

This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.

Just curious because I don't follow this aspect too much, but does FIFA EVER actually do anything when a team is blatantly tapping up a player? Barca have been tapping up Cesc for over a year now, and I assume they don't fear anything from FIFA.

Re Arsenal, I think Cesc is as good as gone. I do think they'll sort out this contract extension with Nasri, but will gladly take 7 million for Clichy (it's Gibbs' time now, and Traore can stay in the side next year rather than going out on loan again).

I agree that Bendtner, Denilson, 'Sicky will all be out the door (although if anyone will take Denilson remains to be seen). I hadn't heard about Eboue being on the market, but wouldn't be surprised to see him trying to find playing time somewhere else.

It's rare, but a couple of years ago, Chelsea were banned from the transfer market for 3 windows or something like that, though they appealed and I don't think they ended up banned from anything. Usually some compromise is worked out (i.e., money) to settle it.

With regard to Cesc, I think Barca felt that he was tapped up by Arsenal when they bought him at 16. English teams get these accusations a lot because I think many continental countries have some rules on youth players that England doesn't have, I think in terms of salary limits and that kind of thing. Someone may be able to clarify the details more.

But nothing will happen to Barca. Just like nothing happened to Real Madrid for clearly tapping up Ronaldo a few years ago. Those teams are FIFA and UEFA's golden boys. Hell, Blatter (an honorary member of Real Madrid, by the way) went so far as to compare Ronaldo to a slave. no

  • North Korean women officially eliminated by Sweden this morning. They'll no doubt face plenty of physical punishment and public shaming when they return home. Is anybody else surprised that we don't hear about a massive flood of defections every time a North Korean team leaves the country for competition? Happens with Cuba all the time, and conditions there are WAY better than they are under the dear leader.

  • Semi-finals of the U-17 World Cup are set after Germany's win over England (3-2) and Mexico's win over France (2-1).

This Thursday, Uruguay will face off vs. Brazil in Guadalajara. Later that afternoon, Mexico will play against Germany in my hometown (Torreon).

In Copa America action, Peru surprisingly tied Uruguay, 1-1. Mexico's depleted U-22 team (plus GIo Dos Santos) somehow didn't embarrass itself, but still lost against Chile (2-1).

Kind of a strange opening round of games in Copa America. Not a single South American team has lost yet. The only teams to lose are Costa Rica and Mexico. The other 4 games so far have all been draws. 5 South American teams made it out of the group stages of the World Cup last year, and Chile was the only one to win their first game, despite all playing teams that didn't even make the World Cup at all. Of course, Chile certainly had the easiest opponent, due to the squad that Mexico is putting out, but it took two goals in the last 25 minutes to pull out a victory. No one has been impressive. Should be a good next set of games, as even the big boys are in a virtual must-win situation.

    MiamiSpartan

  • Wow, Argentina with another draw, this time against Colombia. It would be incredible if they were to get bounced out in the Group stages, especially playing on home soil. But they play Costa Rica next, so they should be able to squeak by from the easiest group.

And for the second straight summer, Messi is not living up to expectations when playing for Argentina. He still looks like the best player on the pitch, but nowhere near the best in the world. There's no doubt in my mind that he is the best, but he looks like a very different player outside of the Barcelona system.

Hopefully I didn't unleash tRCMB jinx, but remember this post if Argentina lifts the trophy and Messi wins the Golden Boot.

  • rockon Mexico moves on to the U-17 World Cup Final after a 3-2 win and a ridiculous comeback vs. Germany.

The Germans took a 2-1 lead halfway through the 2nd half. Mexico tied with 10 minutes to go with a goal straight from a corner, and then scored the game winner in stoppage time (a bicycle kick).

Mexico will face Uruguay (who beat Brazil 3-0) this Sunday at Estadio Azteca.
