I still cant believe the US didnt make it, although the bastardized teams dont help anyone. It is odd that you have dream team Basketball, professional tennis, etc, but Soccer has to have a 3 person waiver rule?
I stumbled upon a pretty good Olympic Soccer preview if anyone is interested, got there via a Big 10 football preview I saw on facebook.

Been meaning to ask you, what's with South America and the Olympics? They're the only countries that care about Olympic soccer because they can't win medals in anything else (apart from the odd sailing, polo or volleyball bronze). Nobody do track and field down there? Too short?

Brazil won 15 medals in 2008 which would put them somewhere between 11-15th place.
It's probably a combination of factors.
Obviously high GDP countries tend to do better, likely due to investment in national teams. High population countries benefit from a large talent pool. Plus, if a country is elite at a sport with many events (see Kenya and long distance running or Cuba in boxing) they'll tally a bunch of medals without a wide diversity of sporting interest.
But, besides the sports you mentioned, you'll see countries compete decently in basketball, judo and a couple others. I think, all things considered they compete fairly well.

Not a huge interest in sports beyond football and baseball?
Belarus/estonia probably wins in wrestling or weightlifting (many categories and weight classes). Morocco? I don't know, probably running. Finland's golds probably almost all come from winter Olympics.
It's an interesting question.

just put this in the olympic thread.... spain are out... lose 1-0 to honduras which means they now can't qualify for the qrt finals.... shock!!!

Good for Honduras, good for MLS, and good for CONCACAF. It was interesting to watch a more talented Spanish side trying to deal with that "gamesmanship" that comes with playing the so-called lesser sides in the region. That's why the US u-23 team is watching this on television. Veterans tend to understand how to counter that style of play; youth doesn't. Interesting to see it played out against a Spain....

Brazil, Great Britain, and Mexico (in no particular order)... with Egypt as a possible dark horse.
