  • Just a couple of thoughts....

    You should probably save a little more. There are lots of good guns, but most will cost $400-$800 depending upon make and model.

    If want a pistol to shoot, get a 9mm. Good ammo choices for self defense and relatively cheap range ammo. I would recommend a full size 9mm (not a sub-compact carry style) as your first gun. Great gun for practice and home defense. Glock, S&W M&P, Springfield are all good names.

    If you are wanting a rifle to shoot, get a 22lr. The Ruger 10-22 is a great gun, but I would recommend the S&W M&P 15-22. A TON OF FUN ! There are similar AR style 22's but, the S&W model works the most similar to an actual AR gun, should you upgrade in the future. I use both my M4 style AR and my M&P 15-22 in competitions and there is very little difference. I consider it a great practice gun.

    Shotgun for self defense/home use = Mossberg or Remington pump in 12ga. ..... get some snap caps, you will shoot it a few times for functionality. The snaps caps are for practice (because you won't shoot it often enough).

    Shotgun for clays (and backup home defense), A good Winchester or Remington semi-auto. Go have fun bustin' clays, and have a gun for the closet at home.

  • The new m1 garand 1954 Springfield. And a 1942 8mm Turkish mauser. Love the m1. These are the two latest additions to my growing collection.

    Home defense I use a Mossberg 500 tactical shotgun with pistol grip. So short I had to register it as a hand gun.

  • Today i shot a S&W M&P40, and it felt good. It was pretty accurate at 20 feet, for the first time firing it.

    Guy at the range said that a few of the police depts in this area have been issuing them, so I gave it a try. I'll have to go back and try the XD40.

  • I went to look at a Ruger 10/22 today and ended up shooting 200 rounds with the S&W M and P 15-22. That was fun. I think I like the look of the 15-22 better. That might now be #1 on my list.

    Any suggestion on type, make, etc would be great.

    For what purpose home protection, hunting, or just shooting at the range? If you just want it for shooting at the range I would go with the Mossberg AR 22. It's only 250 dollars and the bullets are dirt cheap. If you want something for home protection i like the Persuader and you can do a lot with it. If it's for hunting there are a lot of entry level Slug gun's or rifles that are cheap and tack drivers.

    Pretty much every new rifle has a floating barrel and uses glass bedding. It's a cheap and very effective way to secure the barrel to the stock in mass manufacturing . It also improves accuracy .

    The M&P 15-22 is really the best AR style 22lr on the market. They eat almost any 22lr ammo and they can take almost all of the AR accessories. I would recommend checking out the Smith & Wesson Forum, they have a sub-forum just for this platform.

    Also, if you get one, go to 44mag.com and pick up some extra magazines. Otherwise you will spend too much time reloading your mags and not enough time shooting.

    I also recommend Primary Arms (www.primaryarms.com) for good quality inexpensive red dot scopes.

    Extra mags and a good red dot will increase the fun factor 10x.

    Yes, but my understanding from his post was that he was asking about a pistol having such a thing. No idea how that would work.

    I have that mossberg .22 and it is pretty good. It jammed a lot when it was brand new which would have been really bad if I was fighting zombies. I've put a few thousand rounds through it now and have cleaned it a few times and it doesn't jam anymore. Also started using only the Federal brand of 22lr ammo. It's cleaner than the Remington bulk ammo and same price usually.

    I'm headed to the gun show at Gibraltar in a few with my gun expert nephew. I understand that there may be higher pricing in some instances but I can talk to a lot of different people and get a lot of different opinions.

    Talking to the guy at the range yesterday, he said it was really splitting hairs between the Glock 40, S&W M&P 40 and Springfield XD40. Since those were the 3 I was focusing on anyway, I just need to test them all out now.

    The Glock, Smith & Wesson M&P, and Springfield XDm are all fine polymer 9's. See which one fits her hands best and go from there. Assuming you're looking at the Gen 4 Glock, all should have adjustable back straps to help her find something that's comfortable.

    If you're on a budget, the Ruger SR9 isn't bad, either.

    all those guns you mentioned above is what I'm looking to buy for my first handgun. Right now in the lead is either a glock g19 or 17 and then the m&p. Which would you guys recommend? I'll primarily use it for going to the range and home defense. Money isn't an issue so which would you guys lean towards? I'm open for any suggestions as well. I don't know a lot about guns but I've been doing some research.

  • I haven't shot a Glock yet but am leaning toward the M&P40. I need to try out the XD40 and a Glock 40 full size, whatever number that is...but I liked the M&P in my hand.

  • My first gun was a glock 19. Love it but just not practical to me for carry. So I bought the ruger lcp last week. Haven't shit it yet but going out this Friday. I really want an ar-15 but just can't justify spending that kinda cheddar right now. Prob will set some money aside and make a purchase come spring

    Yeah, that happens a lot with new guns, the sear is just a little long so when it wears down it is perfect. I have a Ruger P 95 and i had jamming issues too, but after i put about 500 rounds in it, it work's great.
