You wouldn't go wrong with any of them for a first gun, IMO. Any of those mentioned are easy to shoot, easy to care for, and good general, all around pistols for range and home defense work. I would say go to the range, shoot each, and go with the one that you like. I'm a self-admitted Springfield whore, but just because the XDm fits my hand like the proverbial glove doesn't mean you'll like it. I've shot my buddy's Glocks on a few occasions and I just couldn't get used to the grip angle, but I can't deny they're great guns. Each person will have their own preferences. There's no universal answer. (Despite what the Glock fanbois will tell you! )

People seem to buy glocks based upon their name rather than on their practicality. I've never found them to be that comfortable (form fitting) in my hand. Especially when compared to Kimber's Remingtons, Berretta's, CZ's and Sig's.

Do any of you know of a gun shop in the Metro Detroit (preferably in the Shelby Township area) that has a good FFL transfer price?

So far, Brown Bear Sporting Goods on 21 & Gratiot has the cheapest at $55.

Awesome. I'm about to pick up the Springfield xdm compact 9mm once I get my handgun purchase permit sometime this week. I'm really looking forward to it. Tried a whole bunch of 9mm and that one felt the best in my hand shooting it. Any tips or suggestions about the gun?

I've been contemplating getting a handgun for range, home safety and perhaps getting a CPL permit. I currently have an old bolt action shotgun I got from my dad years ago.

I've tried to do some reading but there are so many conflicting reports out there.

What is needed to buy a pistol ? I would assume they will do a background check. What else ? I've read you need to get a permit from your county sheriff but others have said no.

I'm going to take a gun safety class in January and I'll get a certificate from that.
I'm in mid-Michigan btw.

It depends on where you live I guess. I live in metro Detroit and I had to get a 10 day handgun purchasing permit from my local police station. You just go to the police station, ask for a purchasing permit, and then they do a background check. Depending on if you have anything on your record, you could get the permit right away or it may take up to a week.

Where I've been going is the Firing Line in Westland for some lessons and to try out a bunch of 9mm before I bought one. It only cost me like $10 a session to try 4 different handguns during a shooting session. Read up on what guns you may like to narrow your choices down a bit but definitely shoot them before you buy.

Anyone know of a good gunsmith in Lansing? I can't remember who I used to go to 10+ years ago. I need my Muzzleloader cleaned, and I cannot get the breach plug out. Time to seek a pro.

I saw that when I searched. I will have to check them out. All i really need is a good cleaning and the breach plug replaced. I am hoping for same say service as I have tomorrow off and want to get out deer hunting one last time. If not I can take the Beagle out chasing bunnies.
