  • I'm guessing that after Christmas, there are not quite a few people on here with Kindles. I've found a few different resources out there that are pretty helpful. The first link below is to an Kindle message board that contains alot of good info, including a monthly thread with links to free or cheap books. The other link is directly to Amazon's page for the Kindle deal of the day. Both of these sites have helped me to avoid going bankrupt while loading up my Kindle.

  • I really don't know when I'll ever use my Kindle. I still have a big stack of books waiting to be read, and most of the books I get are either bought used, borrowed from the library, borrowed from a friend, or given as a gift. The few books that I look at that I might think about buying on Kindle are about $1 less than what I would pay for a brand new book (sometimes it's even more????), but I could buy a used one for half that.

So now you can lend Kindle files to a friend, but it's only good for 14 days? That's pretty useless as well, I can't read a book in two weeks unless I am on vacation.

So pretty much when you're done reading a kindle book, it's worthless. You can't even use it for kindling. And I have yet to find a free or bargain Kindle file that I actually plan to read.

I'm glad I got this as a gift, because it seems like sort of a waste of money. Remove the restrictions and make them cheaper and I might actually buy a Kindle book.

You can always strip the DRM from Kindle books to share them that way.

  • Has anyone found a source for discount prices. The new $79 e-reader seems to be identically priced everywhere.

  • I just got my first loaned book the other day. Pretty cool, and surprisingly easy, but apparently I only have 14 days to read it. Not sure what happens if I don't finish it, I guess it just disappears and then I'm screwed. It's kinda BS but I guess I can't really complain about a free book.

Why would you get that when the fire is only 199?

FYI - for the other posters, you can download books, magazines etc. simply and easily for free from all over the internets the same way you can with music, video etc. Some folks are even kindly zipping them together into easily downloadable torrrents thumbsup.

  • The e-ink kindles are really well executed. The battery lasts forever and they are cheap. If you haven't checked out http://www.gutenberg.org/ you are doing yourself a big disservice. It has 36,000 free ebooks. Just click on the one you like and download the kindle format. You can read a ton of great stuff without paying anything or making a trip to the used book store. There is also other sites, like the Baen Free library for science fiction http://www.baen.com/library/defaultTitles.htm . If you have a kindle gathering dust I strongly encourage you to pick it up again and play around because you can find a lot of great free stuff out there.

is also a good site. You can find lots of free or cheap books that aren't a million years old.

I just picked up a Fire as a Christmas gift for my gf. I had heard good things, so I thought why not. It's way cheaper than the iPad.

Something tells me if it sucks I'll probably wind up having to pick up an iPad soon.

I have a feeling I'll be getting a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I was about to buy an iPad a few months ago, but figured I'd wait until after the holidays.

Depending on how much the Fire sucks or doesn't suck will have a big impact on that iPad purchase.

Pretty much the same here. If she likes it, I probably won't have to buy an iPad. If all I hear is bitching, I'll probably have to replace the Fire.

Got one for the wife...problem was I was in a rush and didn't check "is this a gift" box and it came with Kindle Fire plastered all over it....so....it was opened early. From what I have read it's fine for it's intended use but if you think it's going to be a "tablet" you will be in for a bad surprise.

On a side note it was quite entertaining watching the wife trying to put the protective film over the screen after working consecutive 14 hour days...never thought the gift would be entertaining for me too...

Well what is the intended use? I am under the impression that it is a tablet and is supposed to rival the iPad.

I've heard that the fire is as good as it gets for the price, but you shouldn't be expecting an iPad. Two things concern me about the fire: the color screen takes away the incredible read-ability of the kindle and the price is set so low because Amazon is trying to make Amazon your only source for buying books, music, apps, etc (same way Apple is.)

Am torn, wife tried and love the touch, was thinking of an iPad, but the new one is coming out shortly and will be much better, might be smart to get the Touch and buy the iPad later, let them server separate functions.

Not for $200.00...from what I understand it is great for media/reading but very clumsy for anything else and can get frustrating. I know it's a tablet but I guess what I am trying to say is just do not expect it to really rival the iPad in terms of functions.

I bought an iPad yesterday. I still think the Kindle Fire is a great device and anyone looking for a cheap tablet should check it out, but the iPad is much better. In the end, I felt like it was worth spending the extra money to get an iPad.

I feel so dirty, and feel like I've completely betrayed my Android phone. lol
Also, I have some complaints about the iPad... it is far from perfect.

The Kindle Fire is unfortunately missing the absolute best feature and advantage of Kindles: e-ink.

Yeah, I am willing to admit I was wrong about the iPad from the beginning.

It is expensive, but there are just so many apps that it can run, and it can do so many different things... plus the interface/touch screen/form factor is so much better than anything else on the market. There are a few things I don't like (why can't I set up multiple users?!) but it wins on so many other levels that I'm willing to look past those.

I'm very curious about this. I have been thinking about an ipad for a couple weeks now, but I don't get what the purpose is. I have a laptop (that doesn't charge correctly) so why do I need a tablet to search the internet? I have/love/need books (need as in I can't imagine not having a hardcopy), so why read ebooks?

I'm 26, not 86, and I feel like I'm missing something here. Help me.

If I didn't have the iPad, I would get the Nook.

I don't get all the hype with the Kindle Fire. I was able to test out both the Nook and the Kindle Fire and all of those things you said were true. I feel bad for people who bought the Fire thinking it was going to be a tablet that can compete with the iPad.
