tOfficial NHL Trade Deadline 2012 thread

  • I like most of us here (I imagine) am focused mainly on the Red Wings so if you hear rumors or have articles about potential moves, post them here.

Also I hope we can discuss the types of moves we each hope the Wings will make at the deadline. The wings are obviously already damn good, but the looming retirement of Nick Lidstrom has me nervous and I really would like to see a "very very solid" replacement added to the ranks. I wouldn't mind adding a top 6 or even top 3 scorer added either.

The deadline is right around the corner (February 27th) and the Wings have $15.676 million to available to pick up some solid additions. So I want to hear your thoughts RCMB...Go!

Central: Wings able to be major deadline player - 2012 Trade Deadline

The Red Wings have the prospects and cap space to add a piece for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but they're not the only Central team that could be busy.

I hope so, but in general its the right move to be prepared for his departure, even if it is after another year.

Yea. If he does stay, I hope he takes a pay cut just so we could sign a top d-man as well. Wishful thinking

But neither are going to happen this season.

mdpowers, I just want to clarify something you said. That cap number is funny because it works in a fuzzy way. The $15+mil available is only available for this year. If they bring a guy in on a multi-year contract, they will have to work around a tighter cap in the summer if they wish to keep some of their expiring contracts from this year (i.e. Bertuzzi, etc.) So yes, they could theoretically bring in Ovechkin and someone else, but they would have to get rid of A LOT of cap space in the summer.

Suter is more likely than Weber. Pretty sure Weber is a restricted FA after this season, and the preds will likely match any offers.

Landing Parise or Suter and a strong bodied forward before the trade deadline would be a slam dunk.

Yeah I am aware, there is a disclaimer in the link I posted saying that the salary cap floats around and is subject to change (perhaps I should have included that)

  • I see us landing a forward like Tuomo Ruutu.

In the offseason, I'm predicting Nick comes back and we make a run at Parise as a UFA.

I think if we bring in a guy like Parise at the deadline it would really solidify our shot at the cup. The thing is, it runs a pretty big risk to trade for a guy and then have to pay him or risk losing him when it free agency comes anyway. Its a risky move and Holland doesnt seem to be a huge fan of big risks like that. He (and I) would rather trade for a guy who is much more likely to stick around.

  • "7. Which teams can separate from the pack?
The two teams everyone should be scared of making a big move at this point are Boston and Detroit. While the New York Rangers have forged ahead of the Bruins, Boston has the cap space and the assets to make a significant move or two. The Bruins also proved earlier this season that when motivated, they might be the class of the League."

Detroit GM Ken Holland hasn't made a lot of high-profile moves in recent years at the deadline, but the Red Wings are atop the Western Conference and could push even further clear of the competition with the right move or two.

"If GM Dale Tallon wants to buy, the Panthers have the deepest collection of prospects in the League. That said, Tallon just acquired a bunch of those assets at the deadline a year ago and his first priority is to build a consistent winner in South Florida. Among the teams near the top of the standings who are definitely going to be buyers, the Detroit Red Wings have a very nice group of five or six elite prospects.

Few teams ever deal their top prospect, but the Wings have several guys with impact potential and could afford to include one or two in a move for high-profile addition. The Boston Bruins dealt Joe Colborne last season, but there are still a handful of quality prospects there. The New York Rangers also have a collection of young players and prospects if GM Glen Sather does make a push for a star (more on that in a bit.)"

Idk but I'm not sure it would be a good move for the wings, we need young talent, guys that wont be thinking about retiring in the next two years. Guys like Parise, Weber, Nash, and Suter would all be better moves IMO. Not that Selanne isn't good he just isn't the type of player the wings should be investing in at this point, especially when it means you are giving up younger high level prospects to get him. Plus, the better the ducks are playing, the less likely it is that they will trade him.

Why don't you point out Detroit's greatest need? I'd say backup goalie so I'll go w/ Nabokov.

Yeah, I agree. Does not make a ton of sense for a rent a player. Also, just about every team is still in contention so it will be interesting to see who sells and buys

  • What's the likelihood of actually landing someone like Parise?

signature image signature image signature image

    KEARNDAWG_3

  • Holland probably will TRY to land either Weber or Suter, I see him actually landing a gritty forward (ala a Dallas Drake, McCarty, Maltby, Barnaby type player, someone who will draw penalties) I don't see a goalie at all, not with Joey Mac playing so well. I actually think Joey Mac stole Ty Conklin's job this past 2 weeks.

    Don't expect a big deal.

  • You not only have to consider this season, but also cap space in the future. I'm not sure I want to go get Parise, and then pay him a boatload to keep him after this season. The Wings won't have enough cap space to address the depleted defense if Nick and/or Stuart leaves. If they're going after a big money player, I'd much prefer Weber or Suter.

To address the forwards, I'd rather go cheaper and trade for Ruutu, Doan, or Selanne.

No, and weber is a realistic shot. Nashville won't have enough money to sign everyone on that team.
