tOfficial New Spartan Stadium Scoreboards Discussion Thread

  • Ok so I'm bored and there may or may not be any updates on arguably one of the biggest/coolest football developments over the off season.

So I'm calling on all of the photoshop gurus to try and create how big you think the screen on the south side will be.

I've attached a pic of the current scoreboards, and one that is at Michigan.

Just for scale we were told (from Ianni) that the boards were going to be bigger than Michigan's. Online I found that the southern board at Spartan Stadium is 28ft tall and 35ft wide, compared to Michigan's current boards which are 62ft tall and 108 ft wide (though the size is 47ft by 85ft).

I also thought after tIzzo and Magic donated money it would be for lockerrooms, but now I'm starting to think that money is for the scoreboard. Wouldn't there be a vote on the lockerrooms Friday as well?

Thats what I thought initially, but after reading as much as I could find online (which was not a whole lot) I figured the image I produced would be somewhere in the ballpark (I'm pray I'm wrong). But I altered the image and placed it next to the current board it give a better idea of just how much of an improvement it will be.

What's happening on the screen doesn't match what's happening on the field.

What the hell is a morphing screen? What do they mean the U2 screen could turn into a cone?

The U2 screen was multiple screens (LCD or LED or whatever) attached to multiple panels configured in a 360 degree configuration. The thing was like a spaceship or a futuristic robot and could change shapes, some more conical than others.

Worked great as an outdoor concert display that you could place temporarily place in a stadium. Would need huge rethinking to work in a stadium venue where there is actually a game being played. Makes no sense to invest huge dollars in a mini U2 360 like display that will hardly ever be used. Spartan Stadium has grass, which had to be replaced after the U2 concert.

A few MSU administrators may have gotten a little too excited at the U2 concert. A permanent installation is very different than a concert installation. Get permanent night lights to illuminate the stadium first.

It would not be used for concerts, it would be used for game day experience. Also how long will it take everyone to realize that permanent lights is just stupid when the networks are willing to pay for them.

Right just because we say we're playing a night game means ESPN/BTN will cover it.

Apparently, you are not a visionary and cannot grasp the innovative concept behind this. Fortunately, Hollis is a forward thinker and, like just about everything Hollis touches, this video board will change the game. thumbsup

We have had lights for every night game we've played. Also, MSU does not schedule games...the tv networks do.

Were you at the U2 360 concert?

The U2 360 screen was massive and required supports that barely fit in Spartan Stadium. I mean the footprint of the giant supports barely fit in the footprint of the stadium floor.

It completely obscured the field for anyone more than 1/2 way up the stands.

A football stadium is an oval. Contrary to the 360 label, U2 screen played to maybe 270 degrees. Far seats were empty.

Whatever smoke MSU is blowing about this, you have the major obstacles of:

    1) You have to design something you can support from somewhere. It ain't Breslin. You can't hang it from the ceiling. Where are you going to put this thing?

    2) You cannot block field sight lines.

It just makes no sense. Put up new screens in the endfields.

    Are you OK?

What is "this" that I can't grasp? Is there a proposal or concept you would like to discuss?

What is an "ipod iphone"? Do you mean having your iPhone serve as your iPod? I've had iPod capacity on my iPhone for over 2 years. On the iPhone 4S, buy the way, it is just labeled Music.

There are very practical reasons why the U2 360 cone won't work in Spartan Stadium. The actual U2 360 stages, of which there are 3, are retired and spoken 4. This would have to be something new. It's not within the announced budget.

If you can't even answer simple questions as to how a similar U2 360 structure might or might not work, we are done talking.

You can't even answer if you observed the U2 360 stage in action.

    Get some sleep.

Do you really think they are talking about using the actual cone from the concert? Its a new technology that they want to use on a much smaller scale. I don't get whats so hard to understand
