I won't shed a tear if Filpula and/or Hudler are elsewhere next year.

    They've got to keep Abs.

Something to remember, Cleary was injured the entire year. bad knee. So this is the reason he wasn't very able.

He needs surgery so who knows how fit he'll end up. Even if he comes back I would really like to see the wings go for some bigger forwards who can muck in the corners instead of getting knocked on their asses continuously. Make some trades for some younger guys who can keep their feet AND score.

Is that why he whiffed on that open net in game one?

I like the mention of Penner

Also Toronto has a mission to get bigger and they are incredibly stupid. We may be able to dump Franzen on them. If we end up keeping Franzen it is not the worst thing he just needs more consistency.

lol I tweeted the Kings beat writer at the trade deadline to find out if there were any rumors about Penner being traded to the Red Wings.

I got a direct message (just sent to me, not made public) saying, "Ken Holland is too smart to trade for Penner." roflmao

So, um, I don't know if you'll see Penner.

Penner makes 3.5 this year. NO one will offer him that this offsseaon. If he wants to win I think they could get him for 1.5-2 mill

  • Lindstrom's ankle will tell him if its time to retire. He's the only one to decide if he can't play to his own expectations. He's so smart playing his position Lindstrom at 80-85% is still in the top 10% of NHL defensemen. Question will be if he's willing to at play/skate at less than 100%

Brad Stuart came to Detroit to win a Cup. It looks like its time to retool so he'll play on in the West next year.
Holmstrom is 39 and not a Lindstrom/Chelios 39. A 39 year old who played like one. Time to retire.
Hudler is 5'9"/ 185' for a team looking to get bigger, stronger doesn't look like a good fit
Helm is only 25 and will probably be resigned
Miller may be a late decision

Nashville beating Detroit probably makes signing Suter a tougher proposition. Nashville may resign him.
Detroit will probably go all in to get Zach Parise

LIDSTROM is not a top 10% defenseman at 80-85%. His numbers were WAY down this year and compared to the rest of the league, he might not have even been a top 20 defenseman this year.

Good article by The Production Line on the changes that should be coming this offseason. My priorities for the offseason would be:

    1. Sign Parise 2. Sign Suter 3. Sell Lidstrom on the idea of coming back for a discount. Say ~3 million 4. Send Stuart, Bertuzzi and Hudler packing. (I know Bert's still under contract) 5. Bring in a veteran to center the third line. (Gaustad, Doan, someone similar?)

    3. Haha. Holland isn't going to try to hit Lidstrom with a 50% pay cut, and if he did try, Ilitch wouldn't allow it. Not going to happen.

Lidstrom will be playing at or very near his current salary if he returns.

    Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.

Then he shouldn't come back. He's not worth $6M a year anymore and if he won't play for less than that then he's just milking the Wings for more money because he isn't coming back to win.

That may very well be what happens.

But people suggesting him to cut his pay in half (as they've done the past three seasons) are just dreaming. The Wings would not ask him to do so. Isn't going to happen. Yzerman volunteered, but those were different circumstances and not for that steep a reduction.

Well even it isn't half, here is something that has precedent.

In 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons, Lidstrom made $7.4M per season. For the last two seasons he's made $6.2M. That's a difference of $1.2M a year. Let's say he takes another $1.2M a year cut down to $4M a year. A 42 year old Nick Lidstrom at $4M is something manageable for the Wings to bring in some new guys through free agency to reload the team.

Bottom line is that if Lidstrom will only come back for at or around what he's currently making, the Wings will have to choose between making him happy or legitimately competing. At $6M for Lidstrom, the Wings can't do both.

    $6.2-$1.2 is $5.0.

I could see that happening, sure.

Wrong. He was still the best D-man on the team. He was a +21 and would have led all D-men on the team in scoring if he hadn't hurt his ankle. The Wings will be thrilled to pay him $6 mil to come back. Every other team in the league would take him for that. They are paying Ericsson over $3 million to score 1 goal. Lidstrom is worth 10 of him.

  • I see Lidstrom as more valuable because of his passing/shot on the power play and being a coach on the ice for younger players. He plays smart. He's not going to skate like a 25 year old but he knows how to be efficient. Plus Detroit has a history of keeping players like him around. Look at Chelios.

He will probably take a pay cut of 1M to 1.25M to help with the salary cap so they can get the big fish they want in free agency. Illitch and the Wings have never tried to sign him on the cheap.

I always thought Kronwall would rise to the elite level (not Lidstrom level, but closer to say, Weber or Suter's) but he remains basically a very good defenseman, not a great one. And he's not particularly young. People expecting anyone to replace Lidstrom at his overall career level are silly. No one's that good.

Lidstrom when healthy remains the team's best defenseman, though he no longer kills penalties at all.

He was taken off the PK when he hurt his ankle -- had to turn his ankle and expose it to more shots to play in the lanes. Babcock thus took him off the PK.

I know, I know, fire Babcock.
