I've heard more rumors that he's interested in Minnesota, because I think his dad lives there and he wants to be closer to him.

good depth for 3rd or 4th line. the wings aren't going to find all the answers this year. they just need to take a year to clear cap and go hard in summer 2013. the reality is our cap situation won't allow us to make a run at the big pieces we want right now. next year would be a great year to develop our younger players. if everyone else we have now is healthy we can still be a contender next year with adding suter. then we can reload that summer and be set for quite a while

Who are some of the big free agents available in the summer of 2013??

. 3. Suter played for Babcock in Vancouver.

Lidstrom clearly cannot be paid $6 million if the Wings are to make that kind of splash in free agency.

Suter did not he is American.

Duh. That's right. Bad memory here. I was thinking that Suter and Weber were teammates in 2010 as well.

Point production, in my eyes is what separates the good from the great. Especially if we are talking about a player who is expected to be on the first defensive pairing as well as he first team power play. Also, that's what makes you earn a salary equivalent to 10% of the cap.

I never said Lidstrom still isn't a good defenseman. He had decent offensive production and was solid defensively, but be honest, for someone making as much as he does, you need more than that out of him to justify devoting that much of your resources to him.

If you are paying for greatness then you better get greatness.

There are 29 other teams that would take Lidstrom in a heartbeat for $6 million. If you want to look at his value, look at Ian White's career numbers, look at his numbers playing with Lidstrom and then look at his numbers when Lidstrom was out. If he does retire and we don't get Suter, you will be sobbing in your beer after a dozen games.

Why are you so butthurt over this? You honestly think 29 other teams would line up to sign a 42 year old defenseman who put up only 34 points for the season and missed 15% of the season due to a bruise $6M a year? Whatever you are smoking, give me a hit, because that shit is potent.

Honestly, there's no doubt in my mind that any team that has $6M in cap space would sign Lidstrom to a one-year deal. The guy won the Norris Trophy last year. Of course, it's irrelevant since 1) Most teams don't have enough cap space 2) Lidstrom is either going to sign with Detroit or retire.

This. Heck, I'd say Lidstrom could get more than $6 million on the open market.

It's incredible that someone with "wingfan" in his name could so underrate what Nicklas Lidstrom means to the team.

David Jones could be a nice under-the-radar pick up if he's available on the 1st. His stats won't blow you away, but he's a big guy that has shown a nice knack for goal-scoring.

It looks like you are questioning why Lids was out so long. If so, that's terrible. Lids has proven to be one of the most durable hockey players in the last 10-15 years. check his games played throughout the years. If he was out, there was a very good reason. You can question the production but never question his durability or toughness.

  • The Red Wings haven't missed the playoffs since Lidstrom has been with the club. That's good enough for me!

    BoilerRoom

  • On a more general note, does anybody besides me wish we would move away from the Euro model and sign some more N.A. players? The model has served us well, don't get me wrong, but just watching the Philly-Pitt series the guys on Philly like Hartnell and Giroux just seem like they play with so much more fire. I just feel like it's much more entertaining seeing how pumped these guys are when they score, the increased physicality, etc.

I wasn't questioning his toughness. His durability, however, is a subject for debate. It's not his fault, but it is just a fact of life that the body doesn't heal as fast at age 42 as it does at 22 or even 32.

Over his career, Lidstrom has stayed healthy almost the whole way. That is a testament to how tough and durable he is. He's still tough, but he never really recovered this year from a just a bruise. After that, he was not the Lidstrom we've grown to expect. I'm not saying he doesn't have it in him to be good, but at his age, if he goes down again, he might be slowed the rest of the way again. Is that something you feel comfortable betting $6M on?

yes. and so would every other team that had $6+M available...seriously? we're talking about one of the best dmen to ever play the game. we get suter and keep lidstrom and add 1 depth forward for next year and we can be a contender for the cup. 1 year from now is when we need to make our moves for forwards and replacing lidstrom

Just because you are a fan doesn't mean you understand the game. You would think how crappy the Wings played when Lidstrom was out, would be a hint for ole WingNut, but he's much too knowledgeable to pay attention to what actually happens on the ice. He'll just compare stats.wink_msu

But White > Stuart, yes? Please tell me yes.

Does the NHL re-align next year? I wonder how this is factoring into the Wings' plans.

The NHL might be waiting to see what happens with the Coyotes. If they relocate to Quebec City for the 2013-14 season, they'll likely take the spot in the Eastern Conference currently being held by Winnipeg. I can't see the NHL moving Detroit to the Eastern Conference this season only to move them back to the Western Conference a year later.

  • Also...We need to remember that there is no CBA for next season...and who knows what will happen during those negoiations. This whole thread may need to be altered or even put on hold if no deal is reached, or the rules are significantly changed. They aren't even getting together till after the Finals, an I'm pretty sure there are going to be a few upset owners...and player reps in the room after this season.
